How to Install the LINK-C 600 Amp Deadbreak Connector System
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the LINK-C 600 Amp Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System, covering mounting, wiring, and grounding procedures. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench (capable of 12 ft-lbs and 50-60 ft-lbs), 600ATM Operating Tool, Hot stick, Wire strippers, Welding equipment (if using mounted stand-off plug option)
Supplies needed:
ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant, Hex nuts (3/8-16, if using mounted stand-off plug option), Lockwashers (if using mounted stand-off plug option), Studs (3/8-16 x 2", if using mounted stand-off plug option), #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, 600 amp elbow (pre-installed on cable), Apparatus bushing, Epoxy standoff plug, 600 amp bushing extender, Retainer contact, LINK-C connector, Mating 200 amp product (optional), Alignment bracket (if using alignment bracket option), Bushing extender clamp (supplied with alignment bracket), Elbow clamp (supplied with alignment bracket), Hex bolts and lock washers (supplied with alignment bracket)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Components
WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Confirm all components are complete, undamaged, and compatible with the cable and mating products. Have all required tools and supplies at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If retrofitting from a Stick-Op or Bolted Link, refer to the Retrofit Supplement on page 7 of the original documentation before proceeding to Step 4 of these instructions.
- Install the 600 Amp Elbow onto the Cable
Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to the installation instructions supplied with the elbow. Ensure it will align correctly with the stand-off plug or apparatus bushing.
- Install Mounted Stand-Off Plug (If Applicable)
If using a mounted stand-off plug, weld three 3/8-16 x 2” studs to the faceplate according to customer standard practice and specified dimensions. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the stand-off plug, ensuring it aligns with the bushing. Install the stand-off plug over the studs, resting on the nuts or spacers. Secure with lockwashers and hex nuts, tightening to 12 ft-lbs torque. Verify the top surfaces of the bushing and stand-off plug are in-line.
- Prepare Bushing Extender and Elbow Assembly
Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM Operating Tool into the retainer contact, engage the internal hex broach, and thread into the apparatus bushing, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs. Similarly, clean and lubricate the epoxy standoff plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow. Install the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug, insert the 600ATM Operating Tool into the retainer contact, and thread into the epoxy standoff plug, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs.
- Install Alignment Bracket (If Applicable)
If using an alignment bracket, remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket with the supplied hardware, torquing by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush and tight. Position the elbow in the alignment bracket, aligning the elbow cuff evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket with supplied hardware, torquing by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush and tight. Ensure the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance.
- Install the LINK-C Connector
Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the LINK-C connector with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Align the LINK-C connector so it is perpendicular to the switch faceplate when inserted. Insert the LINK-C connector into the bushing extender and elbow, ensuring both lever arms are on the inside of the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots in the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the LINK-C connector inward until the lever arms are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.
- Ground the System and Install Mating Products
Ground the elbow by feeding a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through the grounding eye, twisting it tight, and connecting it to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the LINK-C connector. Ground, then install the desired mating product on the 200 amp interface according to its specific installation instructions. Ground the cable: if using concentric neutral cable, twist the wires together and connect to ground; if using 20MA or 21MA grounding devices, connect the ground lead to ground. For three-phase installations, tie all grounds from all three phases to a common ground point.
