How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 600 Series Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and final assembly to high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Beveling tool, Crimp tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), 600AT or 600ATM assembly tool (torque wrench), Hotstick, Suitable capacitive voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Lubricant (supplied), Vinyl plastic tape (if applicable), Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material, Silicone grease (for test point cap)
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
- Prepare the Cable for Connection
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Remove Cable Jacket and Shield
Remove the outer jacket to the dimension shown in the product documentation. Fold back the shield wires. Depending on cable type, remove the flat metallic tape shield and secure with vinyl plastic tape, or remove the fabric tape shield and install a tape retainer and tape marker, or remove the longitudinally corrugated shield and install a tape marker, or remove the semi-con shield and install a tape marker. Do not cut or nick the cable insulation. For UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cables, refer to the 10TL cable shield adapter instructions.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring not to cut or nick the adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length should be 4 3/8 to 4 11/16 inches (111mm-119mm); redo if outside this range. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 6 1/2 inches / 165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to the supplied instructions. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. After crimping, the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter should be 6 1/2 to 7 1/4 inches (165mm-184mm); redo if outside this range.
- Install Elbow Connector onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until it is fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part. Use the 600AT or 600ATM assembly tool to engage the hex broach in the contact assembly and insert it into the elbow interface to engage the stud. Torque the contact assembly: for products dated September 30, 2013 or earlier, torque to 19-25 foot/pounds; for products dated October 1, 2013 or later, tighten to 50-60 foot/pounds (DO NOT EXCEED 60 FOOT POUNDS).
- Ground Cable Shield and Waterproof Jacket
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with any grounding device, or use an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.
- Verify Seating and Perform Voltage Test (656CETP)
Confirm complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. For 656CETP, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
