How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of 600/900 Series Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating apparatus.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tools, Wire strippers, Crimping tool (for compression lug), Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), 600AT or 600ATM assembly tool, Torque wrench (calibrated for 19-25 ft-lbs or 50-60 ft-lbs), Hotstick (for test point cap removal), Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Measuring tape or ruler
Supplies needed:
655/656/675/676CETP Elbow Connector kit (includes elbow, cable adapter, compression lug), Lubricant (supplied with kit), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if applicable for cable type), Tape marker (if applicable for cable type), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent for grounding), Suitable ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (to replace shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap), Optional: 20MA or 21MA grounding device, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, 10TL cable shield adapter, DR(G)/ESA/GLR/LR loadbreak accessories
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Ensure all apparatus is installed and operated in accordance with individual user, local, and national work rules. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Gather all required tools and supplies, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Installation
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires. Refer to instructions for any specific grounding devices (e.g., 20MA, 21MA, 600ECS) for jacket and shield removal, otherwise proceed with the following cable preparation steps specific to your cable type (outer jacket, shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, longitudinally corrugated shield, semi-con shield). If using UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable, a 10TL cable shield adapter is required; refer to its specific instructions.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation (using the supplied lubricant), always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be 4-3/8 to 4-11/16 inches (111mm-119mm); if not, redo the assembly.
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 6-1/2 inches (165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to the instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-1/2 to 7-1/4 inches (165mm-184mm); if not, redo the assembly.
- Install the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Apparatus
WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until it is fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part. Using the appropriate assembly tool (600AT for products dated Sep 30, 2013 or earlier, torque to 19-25 ft-lbs; 600ATM for products dated Oct 1, 2013 or later, tighten to 50-60 ft-lbs, DO NOT EXCEED 60 ft-lbs), engage the hex broach in the contact assembly, insert it into the elbow interface to engage the stud, and torque/tighten as specified.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a piece of wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with any grounding device, or use an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Verify Seating and Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
Confirm complete assembly by checking that no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. If installing a 656CETP, you may perform a voltage test using its integral capacitance test point. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
- Install Loadbreak Accessories (Optional)
If using optional loadbreak accessories (e.g., DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR), clean and lubricate the entire loadbreak interface and the accessory of the appropriate voltage class with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD® approved lubricant. Install the accessory to the tap plug interface following the instructions provided with that specific product.
