How to Install T&B Liquidtight Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for properly installing T&B liquidtight connectors with flexible metallic conduit, ensuring high performance and reliability in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw or Power Band Saw, Smooth jaw wrench, Torque wrench, Metal jig (optional)
Supplies needed:
Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, T&B Liquidtight connector (e.g., 5000 series), T&B 140 series locknuts (for knockout applications), T&B 5260 series sealing gaskets (for knockout applications), Locknut (for 7000 and 9000 series), PVC cement (optional)
- Safety Precautions and Conduit Preparation
WARNING: Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent risk of electrical shock. CAUTION: This product should be installed by a qualified electrician. Wear appropriate hand and eye protection. Prepare the flexible metallic conduit by cutting it with a clean, square end. Use a 32 Tooth/inch hacksaw, a power band saw (24-32 Tooth/inch wavy set, max 400 ft/min), or a metal jig. Do not use an abrasive wheel for cutting.
- Assemble Connector Components onto Conduit
For 5000, 7000, 9000, and PVC coated 3300 series connectors, slide the gland nut onto the prepared flexible conduit. Next, slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Finally, thread the Safe Edge™ Cone onto the conduit. If installing a PVC coated connector and using a smooth jaw wrench, apply PVC cement if any metal is exposed due to gouging.
- Install Connector into Knockout Box
Insert the assembled connector body into the knockout box. For standard installations, secure with the provided locknut. For knockout applications, use T&B 140 series locknuts and 5260 series sealing gaskets (purchased separately). Note that 7000 and 9000 series connectors require a separately ordered locknut. For Chase® connector assemblies, achieve lock-up by tightening the Chase® Nipple to the body or by turning the body onto the Chase® Nipple.
- Secure and Torque the Connector
Position the locknut on the inside of the knockout box and tighten it securely to the connector body. Refer to the provided torque table for the correct tightening torque based on the fitting's trade size (e.g., 200 lb-in for 3/8", 300 lb-in for 1/2", up to 1600 lb-in for 2-4"). Ensure proper seating of any captive 'O' ring (e.g., 5371 series) on the outside of the box.
