How to Install T&B Liquidtight Connectors (including 5351 Series)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper and safe installation of T&B liquidtight connectors, including the 5351 series, for liquidtight flexible metallic conduit applications. Ensure high performance and reliability by following these techniques.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Metal jig (optional), Power band saw (optional), Smooth jaw wrench, Torque wrench, Safety glasses, Work gloves
Supplies needed:
T&B Liquidtight Connector (e.g., 5351 Series), Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, Locknut (if not included or for specific applications), Sealing gaskets (for knockout applications, if needed), PVC cement (optional, for PVC coated connectors)
- Ensure Safety and Disconnect Power
Before beginning any installation, disconnect all power to the circuit to prevent risk of electrical shock. Wear appropriate hand and eye protection. This product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
- Prepare the Flexible Conduit to Length
Cut the liquidtight flexible metallic conduit with a clean, square end. For best results, use a metal jig and a sharp hacksaw with 32 teeth per inch, or a power band saw with 24-32 teeth per inch at no more than 400 feet per minute. Do not use an abrasive wheel for cutting the conduit.
- Assemble Connector Components onto the Conduit
For 5000, 7000, 9000 series, and PVC coated 3300 series connectors, slide the gland nut onto the cut conduit first. Then, slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Finally, thread the Safe Edge™ Cone into the conduit end, ensuring it is properly seated.
- Mount Connector Body to Knockout Box
Insert the connector body through the knockout opening in the electrical box or enclosure. Secure the connector body to the box wall using a locknut on the inside of the box. For specific knockout applications, use T&B 140 series locknuts and 5260 series sealing gaskets, which may need to be purchased separately. Note that for 7000 and 9000 series, the locknut is ordered separately.
- Securely Tighten the Gland Nut
Tighten the gland nut onto the connector body to the specified torque. For 3/8" fittings, apply 200 lb.-in.; 1/2" fittings, 300 lb.-in.; 3/4" fittings, 500 lb.-in.; 1" fittings, 700 lb.-in.; 1 1/4" fittings, 1000 lb.-in.; 1 1/2" fittings, 1200 lb.-in.; and 2" through 4" fittings, apply 1600 lb.-in. For PVC coated connectors, use a smooth jaw wrench to prevent damage; if gouging occurs, apply PVC cement.
