How to Install T&B Liquidtight Flexible Metallic Conduit Connectors

This guide provides instructions for the proper installation of T&B liquidtight connectors, including the 5330 series, onto flexible metallic conduit to ensure high performance and reliability.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Metal jig, Smooth jaw wrench, Torque wrench, Hand protection, Eye protection

Supplies needed:

Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, T&B Liquidtight Connector, T&B 140 series locknuts, T&B 5260 series sealing gaskets, PVC cement

  1. Prepare for Installation and Observe Safety Warnings

Before starting, thoroughly read and understand all instructions and safety information. Disconnect all power to the circuit to prevent the risk of electrical shock. Ensure that a qualified electrician performs the installation in strict accordance with all national and local electrical codes. Always wear appropriate hand protection and eye protection during the installation process.

  2. Cut the Flexible Conduit to Length

Cut the liquidtight flexible metallic conduit to the desired length, ensuring a clean and square end cut. For best results, use a metal jig (if available) and a sharp hacksaw with 32 teeth per inch. For high-production environments, a power band saw with 24-32 teeth per inch, operating at no more than 400 feet per minute, is recommended. Do not use an abrasive wheel for cutting.

  3. Assemble the Connector Components onto the Conduit

For 5000, 7000, and 9000 series connectors (including 5330 series) and PVC coated 3300 series, begin by sliding the gland nut onto the conduit. Next, slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Finally, thread the Safe Edge™ Cone into the connector body. For PVC coated connectors, use a smooth jaw wrench for tightening to prevent gouging the coating. If metal becomes exposed due to gouging, apply PVC cement.

  4. Install the Connector into the Knockout Box

Insert the assembled connector body through the knockout opening in the electrical box. For knockout applications, secure the connector using a T&B® 140 series locknut and a T&B® 5260 series sealing gasket (these may need to be purchased separately). For 7000 and 9000 series, the locknut must be ordered separately. Ensure the 'Box side' marking on the connector body is correctly positioned on the outside of the box.

  5. Tighten the Gland Nut and Locknut to Specifications

    Securely tighten the gland nut onto the connector body and the locknut against the box wall. Refer to the provided torque table for specific tightening torque values based on the fitting's trade size (e.g., 3/8" to 200 lb-in, 1/2" to 300 lb-in, 3/4" to 500 lb-in, 1" to 700 lb-in, 1 1/4" to 1000 lb-in, 1 1/2" to 1200 lb-in, 2" to 1600 lb-in, 2 1/2" to 1600 lb-in, 3" to 1600 lb-in, 3 1/2" to 1600 lb-in, 4" to 1600 lb-in). Proper tightening ensures a liquidtight seal and secure grounding.
