What is the difference between PCJ Style 1 and Style 2 joints?
Style 1 is for straight splicing of two similar cables. Style 2 includes separate cable adapters for transition splicing between two different cable sizes.
How should catalog numbers be constructed for transition joints?
When constructing a catalog number for a transition joint (two different-size cables), list the larger connector first and the smaller connector second.
What is the short-time current rating for PCJ cable joints?
The short-time current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What is the continuous current rating for PCJ cable joints?
The continuous current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What safety standards do PCJ power cable joints meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and the connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
What pull force can the pin-and-socket interlock withstand?
The pin-and-socket interlock design of the PCJ power cable joints can withstand a pull force of up to 500 lb.
Which connector material should be used for different cable types?
Aluminum compression connectors are for aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper. Copper compression connectors are for copper-to-copper only and must not be used on aluminum.
What voltage classes are Elastimold PCJ joints available for?
Elastimold PCJ power cable joints are available in 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV classes.
What types of cable splicing can PCJ joints perform?
PCJ power cable joints can perform straight splicing of two similar cables or transition splicing of different cable sizes up to 1250 kcmil.
What conductor materials are compatible with PCJ cable joints?
PCJ power cable joints can be used with both copper and aluminum conductors, accommodating a wide range of sizes up to 1250 kcmil.
How to Install the 35PCJ1P1400 Straight Joint
Installation guide for creating a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor wire shielded cables.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cable ties tightening tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant, Appropriate connector for grounding wires, DELTECt Cable ties (for 35kV only), Insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if supplied with protective shipping cover)
- Prepare Cables for Joint
Overlap both cables and cut to 12" (305mm) from the center line of the joint. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37" (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21" (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Cut both cables at the center line of the joint.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1 insulation shield by 1/2" to 1-1/2" (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1 up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both cables. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable insulation or conductor. For 500-750 MCM cables, the conductor length should be 2 1/2" (64mm) and the insulation shield length 6 1/4" (159mm). For 1000 MCM cables, the conductor length should be 2 3/8" (68mm) and the insulation shield length 6 3/8" (162mm).
- Install Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them and immediately insert into the splice. Crimp the splice following the manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations; if it exceeds the Max Check After dimension, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs from the splice. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate in the direction of the arrows to create a ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Complete Joint Assembly
Slide the housing into its final position, ensuring proper alignment by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, approximately 1/4" from the edge of the splice and then 1/4" from the first tie with an offset of the locking heads. Use the T&B WT3D tool to tighten and trim the ties. Remove the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket over both cables and the joint housing.
