How to Install the ABB 15/25/35PCJ1 Straight Joint

This guide provides detailed instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the ABB 15/25/35PCJ1 straight joint. It covers preparation, splicing, and final assembly for aluminum or copper conductors in wire shielded cables.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Cable cutters, Cable strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV installations only)

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Appropriate connector (for conductors), Deltect Cable ties TYD5135 (for 35kV installations only), #14 AWG copper wire (if shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG), Appropriate connector (for grounding wires)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Prepare Workspace

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Verify that all package contents are complete and undamaged, and that all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Have all required tools readily available and maintain a clean workspace throughout the procedure. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices.

  2. Prepare Cables for Jointing

Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the center line of the joint to ensure sufficient length for shield wires. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires on both cables. Finally, cut both cables precisely at the center line of the joint.

  3. Prepare Cable 1 and Store Joint Housing

Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires, ensuring not to contaminate electrical interfaces.

  4. Prepare Cables for Splice Installation

Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the specified 'X' and 'Y' dimensions for your conductor size (refer to the provided dimension table in the full instructions). Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor during this process.

  5. Install and Crimp the Splice

If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Crimp the splice following the manufacturer's recommendations provided with the splice. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. After crimping, remove any sharp protrusions or burrs from the splice and ensure all metal chips or filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate in the direction of the arrows to create a lubricant build-up at the edge of the insulation shield.

  6. Complete the Joint Assembly

Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV installations only, install two DELTECT Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, starting 1/4 inch from the splice edge and then 1/4 inch from the first with offset locking heads, using a T&B WT3D tool. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (if applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
