What material are PCJ cable joints made from?
Elastimold PCJ power cable joints use permanently crimped connectors inside ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber housings.
Are PCJ joints compatible with fabric-tape or lead-jacketed cables?
Yes, PCJ joints work with fabric-tape shielded or lead-jacketed cables when used with the proper Elastimold cable shield adapter or grounding device.
What type of connector is included in the N1 kit?
The N1 kit includes an aluminum compression connector suitable for splicing aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper conductors.
What is the short-time current rating of PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What is the continuous current rating of PCJ joints?
The continuous current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What safety standards do PCJ joints meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
What pull force can the PCJ joint withstand?
The pin-and-socket interlock of the PCJ power cable joint is designed to withstand a pull force of up to 500 lb.
Is taping required for PCJ cable joint installation?
No, the cable entrance engages the insulation shielding of the cable, which eliminates the need for taping during installation.
What type of cable is PCJ designed for?
PCJ power cable joints are designed for use with UD cable that has concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding.
What conductor materials are compatible with PCJ joints?
PCJ power cable joints can be used with copper or aluminum conductors, supporting a wide range of sizes up to 1250 kcmil.
How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint, a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible joint for wire shielded cables, suitable for aluminum to aluminum and/or aluminum to copper conductors.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire Strippers, Measuring Tape, Utility Knife, Wire Brush, Crimping Tool, T&B WT3D Tool (for 35kV installations)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Electrical Connector (for grounding wires), DELTECt Cable Ties (TYD5135, for 35kV installations), #14 AWG Copper Wire (or equivalent, if needed for grounding)
- De-energize and Inspect Apparatus
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts before beginning installation. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Installation
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline to ensure sufficient shield wire length. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires on both cables. Cut both cables precisely at the joint centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Joint Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch (13mm) to 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it back until it rests against the folded shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice and Remove Insulation
Carefully remove the cable insulation from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the 'X' and 'Y' dimensions provided in the documentation for your conductor size. Next, carefully remove the insulation shield from both cables, again using the specified 'X' and 'Y' dimensions. WARNING: Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor during this step.
- Install and Crimp the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Before crimping, check the dimension of the inserted conductors against the 'Max Check Before' table in the documentation. If it exceeds the maximum, re-do the assembly. Crimp the splice securely, following the manufacturer's recommendations provided with the splice. After crimping, wipe off any excess inhibitor.
- Final Splice Preparation
Check the distance between the cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table. If it exceeds the maximum, re-do the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping and ensure all metal chips or filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate them in the direction of the arrows to create a lubricant build-up at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Position Joint Housing
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV installations ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance. Position the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the splice edge, and the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first, with an offset of the locking heads. Use the T&B WT3D tool (not included) to tighten and trim the ties. For 35kV installations ONLY: Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye.
- Grounding and Finalization
Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagram. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat this for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Where applicable, reconstruct the cable jacket over both cables and the joint housing.
