How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ1 straight joint, a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible joint for aluminum or copper conductor wire shielded cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Measuring tape or ruler, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV cable ties, if applicable), Cleaning supplies
Supplies needed:
15/25/35PCJ1 Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), User-supplied connector (for main conductor splice), DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG), Appropriate connector (for grounding wires), Cable jacket reconstruction material (if applicable)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Check
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Centerline
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint's centerline to ensure sufficient shield wire length for rejoining. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Finally, cut both cables precisely at the joint's centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires for temporary storage.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2. Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor. Refer to the provided 'X' and 'Y' dimensions in the documentation for precise removal lengths based on conductor size (e.g., 500-750 MCM or 1000 MCM).
- Install and Crimp the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the conductor insertion dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table in the documentation; if it exceeds the maximum, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice according to its specific recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds the maximum, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs from crimping and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area. Clean and lubricate the cables as indicated, building up lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV installations ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, approximately 1/4 inch from the splice edge and then 1/4 inch from the first with offset locking heads (use T&B WT3D tool). Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain and secure the shield wires to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (if applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
