Frequently Asked Questions

How should a catalog number be constructed for a transition joint?

When constructing a catalog number for a transition joint, list the larger connector first and the smaller connector second.

What are Elastimold PCJ power cable joints used for?

Elastimold PCJ power cable joints are used for straight splicing of two similar cables or transition splicing of different cable sizes up to 1250 kcmil. They provide a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible splice.

What voltage classes are available for PCJ power cable joints?

Elastimold PCJ power cable joints are available in 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV classes.

What conductor types and sizes are compatible with PCJ joints?

These joints can be used with copper or aluminum conductors, accommodating a wide range of sizes up to 1250 kcmil.

What types of splicing applications do PCJ power cable joints support?

PCJ joints support straight splicing of two similar cables (Style 1) and transition splicing between two different cable sizes (Style 2).

Where can Elastimold PCJ power cable joints be installed?

These joints can be installed in direct-burial, underground vault, and even overhead applications, as they provide a fully submersible splice.

Is taping required for the cable entrance during installation?

No, the cable entrance engages the insulation shielding of the cable, eliminating the need for taping.

What type of compression connector should be used for different conductors?

Aluminum compression connectors are for aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper. Copper compression connectors are for copper-to-copper connections only and must not be used on aluminum conductors.

What industry standards do PCJ power cable joints meet?

The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and the connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings. Electrical ratings meet IEEE 404.

What are the continuous and short-time current ratings for PCJ joints?

The continuous current rating is equal to that of the cable rating. The short-time current rating is also equal to the cable rating, up to 35 kA.

How to Install the 35PCJ1 Series Straight Joint

This guide provides detailed instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 35PCJ1 series straight joint for wire shielded cables, connecting aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper conductors.

Tools needed:

Cable stripping tools, Utility knife or tapering tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Burr removal tool, Measuring tape or ruler, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV Deltec cable ties)

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing (included), Splice (Conductor Contact) (included), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE) (included), Conductor connector (user supplied), Grounding wire (#14 AWG copper or equivalent, if needed), DELTEC Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), Cleaning supplies, Cable jacket reconstruction material

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Check

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before starting. Inspect the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cable Lengths and Jackets

Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline. Cut both cables at the joint centerline. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires.

  3. Prepare Cable 1 Insulation and Store Housing

Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield at least 1/2 inch to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1 up to the shield wires.

  4. Remove Cable Insulation and Shield

Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both cables according to the 'X' and 'Y' dimensions specified for your conductor size (refer to the document's table). WARNING: DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR.

  5. Install and Crimp the Splice

If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; redo if it exceeds the maximum. Crimp the splice following its provided recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; redo if it exceeds the maximum. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area.

  6. Lubricate Cables for Housing

Clean the cables where indicated. Lubricate the cables in the direction of the arrows to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  7. Position Joint Housing

Slide the joint housing into its final position. Ensure proper positioning by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield.

  8. Complete Grounding and Jacket Reconstruction

For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTEC Cable ties (TYD5135) on each end of the cable entrance, 1/4 inch apart with offset locking heads, using a T&B WT3D tool. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye; repeat for Cable 2. If smaller, use separate #14 AWG copper wire. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
