What are the installation applications for PCJ power cable joints?
PCJ power cable joints provide a permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible splice for direct-burial, underground vault, and overhead applications.
What is the BIL impulse withstand for 35 kV class?
For the 35 kV class, the BIL impulse withstand is 300 kV (1.2 x 50 μsec. wave).
What is the overall length of a 35PCJ1QX joint?
The 35PCJ1QX joint has an overall length (Dimension A) of 15 3/4 inches.
How do I order a transition joint for different cable sizes?
When constructing a catalog number for a transition joint, list the larger connector first and the smaller connector second.
Can copper connectors be used with aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors are only suitable for splicing copper conductors to copper conductors and should not be used on aluminum conductors.
Can aluminum and copper conductors be spliced together?
Yes, kits with aluminum compression connectors are suitable for splicing aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper conductors.
What are the current ratings for PCJ power cable joints?
The continuous current rating is equal to that of the cable rating. The short-time current rating is equal to the cable rating up to 35 kA.
What is the phase-to-ground voltage for 35 kV class?
The phase-to-ground voltage for the 35 kV class is 20.2 kV.
What safety standards do PCJ joints meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and the connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
What is the pull force rating for the interlock?
The pin-and-socket interlock of the PCJ power cable joints is designed to withstand a pull force of up to 500 lb.
How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1,NPQ Straight Joint
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ1,NPQ straight joint, a permanent, fully shielded, and submersible joint for wire shielded cables. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious or fatal injury.
Estimated time: 3h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Wire-brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Connector (user supplied, for grounding wires), DELTECt Cable ties (for 35kV ONLY), No. 14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG)
- Safety and Initial Inspection
Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Centerline
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the center line of the joint. This will ensure sufficient length of shield wires to be able to rejoin over the joint. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and that of Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Finally, cut both cables at the center line of the joint.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1 at least 1/2 inch (13mm) to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1 up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both cables. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR. Refer to the 'X' and 'Y' dimensions provided in the document's diagram for precise removal lengths based on conductor size (e.g., 2 1/2 inches for 500-750 MCM conductor 'X', 6 1/4 inches for 'Y').
- Install the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the recommendations provided with it. Wipe off all excess inhibitor where applicable. Check the distance between cable insulations; if it exceeds the 'Max Check After' dimension, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area.
- Lubricate Cables for Housing
Clean the cables where indicated in the diagram. Lubricate the cables in the direction of the arrows to provide a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Position Joint Housing
Slide the housing into its final position. Ensure proper positioning by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield.
- Install 35kV Cable Ties (If Applicable)
For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance. Begin by installing the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the edge of the splice, then install the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first with an offset of the locking heads. Use a T&B WT3D tool (not included) to tighten and trim off the extra material of the ties.
- Complete Grounding and Jacket Reconstruction
Remove the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye and discard it. Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagram. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
