What is the product's primary application?
The Elastimold 274FLR protects light duty underground distribution systems, including sub-loops and radial taps. It replaces existing 200 Amp loadbreak tap elbows.
What fuse sizes are compatible with Housing H Code 1?
Housing H Code 1 supports fuse sizes of 3-45A at 8.3kV and 6-20A at 15.5kV.
How is the correct housing size selected?
The correct housing size (H code) is selected based on the desired fuse size and voltage.
How is the compression lug code determined?
The proper compression lug code (X code) is chosen according to the conductor size from the Conductor Code Table.
Are sealing and grounding kits recommended for the 274FLR?
For safety purposes, a sealing and grounding kit is highly recommended with the loadbreak elbow.
Which sealing kit is used for jacketed concentric neutral cables?
For jacketed concentric neutral cables, the sealing kit part number is 200ECS or the suffix "-S" is added to the part number.
What industry standards does the 274FLR meet?
The 274FLR meets IEEE 386, ANSI C37.40, ANSI C37.41, and ANSI C37.47 standards.
What items are included in the 274FLR kit?
Each kit contains an elbow connector housing, crimp connector, probe lug, lubricant, installation instructions, crimp chart, and a V.D Cap-Peroxide.
How is a blown fuse indicated on the 274FLR?
The 274FLR has built-in voltage test points for quick and convenient blown fuse indication.
Does the 274FLR product include a fuse?
No, the fuse for the 274FLR is ordered separately.
How to Install the 168FLR/274FLR Loadbreak Fused Elbow Connector
Complete installation guide for the 168FLR or 274FLR Loadbreak Fused Elbow Connector, designed to provide an in-line full-range current limiting fuse while terminating UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Allen Wrench (torque limiting, supplied), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Cable Half Housing, Elbow Half Housing, Fuse, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Connector, Hose Clamp, Lubricant (supplied), Optional 200ECS Cold Shrink Cable Seal, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Grounding connector
- Prepare Cable for Training
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation to prevent serious or fatal injury. Using the bushing centerline as reference, cut excess cable off 20 inches minimum beyond the bushing. Slide the optional 200ECS Cold Shrink Cable Seal onto the cable, if used. Remove the jacket from the excess cable length and a distance of 'A' + 7-3/8 inches from the bushing centerline. If a Cable Seal kit is used, follow its instructions. Otherwise, unwrap and fold the concentric neutral wires back over the jacket and bind them. Using the bushing centerline as reference, squarely cut off the cable a distance of 'A', leaving 7-3/8 inches minimum of cable to terminate. Note: 'A' = 11-1/2 inches for FLR-1, 15-3/4 inches for FLR-3.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Lug
Cut 1-1/8 inches from the cable end, ensuring a square cut and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Crimp the unthreaded end of the compression lug to the conductor, referring to the crimp chart for tool information. Start crimp at the crimp line mark and rotate 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 5-1/2 inches from the end of the lug. Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Lubricate and Insert Cable Half
Apply the supplied lubricant to the outside of the connector, cable insulation, conductive shield, and the cable half of the Fused Elbow cable entrance end. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE lubricant. Insert the connector and cable into the cable half of the Fused Elbow until the top end of the connector protrudes beyond surface 'A'. This allows the fuse to be tightened before bottoming on the rubber.
- Install the Fuse
Insert the threaded terminal end of the fuse into the cable half of the Fused Elbow and hand tighten it into the cable connector. CAUTION: The fuse stud will fracture if over torqued. Pull the housing up against the bottom of the tightened fuse.
- Assemble Probe Connector
Assemble the probe connector to the fuse terminal. Rotate the probe connector so that the flats are perpendicular to the bushing with which it will mate. Lock the probe connector in position and tighten the setscrews using the special torque limiting allen wrench supplied in the fuse kit. Rotate the cable half of the Fused Elbow so that the test point is perpendicular to the flats on the probe connector.
- Assemble Elbow Half
Apply lubricant to the elbow half of the fused elbow and assemble it to the cable half. The cuff of the cable half will overlap the elbow half by 3/4 inch. Ensure the probe connector faces the opening of the fused elbow half and the two test points are in line with each other. Insert the probe into the probe connector. Push on the cable if necessary to align the probe with the fuse. Start the threads by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. To tighten, use the special torque limiting allen wrench supplied; insert the short end into the hole in the probe and tighten until the wrench bends and remains bent. Position the hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through each grounding eye on the elbow housing and cable housings. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Finish installing the 200ECS jacket seal if used. Twist all neutral wires, exercising care not to damage grounding eyes, and connect to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool as per operating instructions. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
