How to Install the 168FLR/274FLR Loadbreak Fused Elbow Connector

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 168FLR or 274FLR Loadbreak Fused Elbow Connector, covering cable preparation, component assembly, and neutral connections.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Allen Wrench (torque limiting), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

168FLR/274FLR Connector Kit (Fuse, Lug, Probe, Probe Connector, Hose Clamp, Lubricant), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate ground connector, 200ECS Cold Shrink Cable Seal (optional)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Ensure Safety

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before starting. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety. Inspect all kit contents for completeness and damage. Verify component fit with cable and mating products, checking threads by hand-threading the probe into the lug. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean workspace.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Cut excess cable, leaving 20 inches minimum beyond the bushing. If using a 200ECS Cold Shrink Cable Seal, slide it onto the cable. Remove the jacket for a length of 'A' (fuse body length) + 7-3/8 inches from the bushing centerline. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires over the jacket. Squarely cut the cable a distance of 'A' from the bushing centerline, leaving 7-3/8 inches minimum to terminate. ('A' is 11-1/2 inches for FLR-1, 15-3/4 inches for FLR-3).

  3. Install the Compression Lug and Clean Insulation

Cut 1-1/8 inches from the cable end, avoiding nicks. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Crimp the unthreaded end of the lug to the conductor, following the crimp chart and rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Wipe excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 5-1/2 inches from the lug end, beveling the insulation 1/8 inch max. Thoroughly clean insulation to remove all conductive residue.

  4. Assemble Cable Half and Install Fuse

Apply the supplied lubricant to the connector, cable insulation, conductive shield, and the cable entrance end of the Fused Elbow cable half. Insert the connector and cable into the cable half until the connector protrudes beyond surface 'A'. Insert the fuse's threaded terminal into the cable half and hand-tighten it into the cable connector. CAUTION: Over-torquing will fracture the fuse stud. Pull the housing up against the bottom of the tightened fuse.

  5. Attach and Secure the Probe Connector

Assemble the probe connector to the fuse terminal. Rotate the probe connector so its flats are perpendicular to the mating bushing, then lock it. Tighten the setscrews using the supplied torque-limiting Allen wrench. Rotate the cable half of the Fused Elbow so its test point is perpendicular to the probe connector's flats.

  6. Assemble Elbow Half and Probe

Apply lubricant to the elbow half and assemble it to the cable half, ensuring a 3/4 inch overlap and that the probe connector faces the elbow half opening with test points aligned. Insert the probe into the probe connector, pushing the cable if needed for alignment. Hand-start threads carefully. Tighten using the supplied torque-limiting Allen wrench until it bends and remains bent. Position and tighten the hose clamp; DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.

  7. Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through each grounding eye on the elbow and cable housings. Twist tightly, avoiding damage to the eyes. If used, finish installing the 200ECS jacket seal. Twist all neutral wires, taking care not to damage grounding eyes, and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack for elbow operation.

  8. Connect to Bushing Plug and Verify Voltage

Lubricate the elbow connector's receptacle and the mating bushing ONLY IF KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Operate the elbow using a hotstick, pushing with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. To test voltage, remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peel at an angle). WARNING: Use a suitable sensing device for capacitive test points; do not use conventional meters. Treat as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means. Clean, lubricate, and replace the cap after testing.
