How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of 161LRJS (without test point) and 162LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device (for 162LRJS test point)
Supplies needed:
161LRJS or 162LRJS Elbow Connector Kit (includes Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant, Sealing strips), Mastic strips (if not included in kit or additional needed), Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire or equivalent, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap, if not supplied with kit)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Check package contents for completeness. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If installing a 162LRJS, lubricate the test point and cap, then install the cap if it's not already installed.
- Train and Prepare the Cable
Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of 24-26 inches of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid beyond the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Unwrap the neutral wire past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Lug
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hotstick tool for operation; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Refer to the operating instructions for proper loadmake or loadbreak procedures.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LRJS Only)
If installing a 162LRJS with a test point, perform a voltage test to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the specific sensing device used. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false reading. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
