How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed to terminate UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires and connect to 15kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick (fully insulated live-line tool), Crimp tool, Wire brush, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points (for 162LRJS)
Supplies needed:
161LRJS or 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, probe wrench, lubricant, sealing strips), Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, Grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare Cable and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety. Train cable for slack. Provide 24-26” extra neutral wire length beyond bushing centerline. Remove outer jacket 7.75-8” back. Unwrap neutral wire past centerline. Cut cable squarely at bushing centerline. Inspect all components for damage, fit, and compatibility. Check probe threads with lug; replace if resistance occurs.
- Prepare Cable End
Wrap one mastic strip around the jacket, stretching slightly. Bend neutral wires back over mastic, pressing them in. Wrap a second mastic strip, overlapping neutral wires; use a third if needed to build diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove insulation shield and insulation (2-1/8” insulation, 6-7/8” shield) squarely, without nicking conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install compression lug. Rotate to spread inhibitor. Align lug thread with bushing bore. Crimp starting at mark, rotating 180 degrees each crimp. Wipe excess inhibitor. Remove insulation shield (6-7/8” from cable end). Bevel insulation end 1/8” max. Thoroughly clean insulation.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate cable insulation and inside elbow housing with supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide elbow connector onto cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align elbow with compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread probe into lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly without damage. Twist all neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
WARNING: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a fully insulated "hotstick" type live-line tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Consult company safe work practices for required tool length. If using 162LRJS and a test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.
