Overview

The ABB 161-14-2 Deadend Recp Grounding Cable is a #14 RopeLay stranded copper wire with a tinned finish, engineered for reliable grounding in industrial and utility applications. This 38-inch cable provides a low-resistance conductive path to ground, meeting critical safety and electrical performance requirements. The tinned copper construction resists corrosion and oxidation, ensuring long-term conductivity in harsh environments. RopeLay stranding delivers both flexibility and mechanical strength, simplifying installation while maintaining high current-carrying capacity. Designed for deadend grounding applications, this cable ensures secure, low-resistance connections essential for equipment protection and personnel safety. Compatible with standard grounding clamps and connectors, the ABB 161-14-2 is a cost-effective solution for substations, switchgear, and transmission/distribution systems. This product is part of ABB’s Installation Products line, delivering reliable electrical connectivity solutions for critical infrastructure. The tinned finish not only improves corrosion resistance but also facilitates soldering if required. The cable’s deadend design allows for secure termination at grounding points, preventing loosening over time. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, including in high-humidity or chemically aggressive environments where standard copper may degrade. The 38-inch length is optimized for common grounding setups, such as connecting equipment to ground rods or grounding grids, without excessive material waste. As part of ABB’s Installation Products portfolio, this cable aligns with the company’s commitment to high-quality, durable solutions for electrical infrastructure.

How to Install the ELASTIMOLD 160DRG/167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation of ELASTIMOLD 15kV class 160DRG and 167DRG insulated caps with ground lead onto loadbreak bushing interfaces.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

ELASTIMOLD 160DRG/167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, Lubricant

  1. Perform Safety Checks and Prepare for Installation

Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating products. Verify that all components fit correctly with the cable and/or mating products. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Connect Electrostatic Grounding Wire

Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground. Ensure enough slack is left for hot-stick operation of the insulated cap. CAUTION: Train the electrostatic grounding wire so it does not contact the bushing interface during operation. WARNING: If the ground lead disconnects during operation, do not attempt to reattach without first pulling the insulated cap off the bushing with the hotstick.

  3. Prepare Insulated Cap

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap’s internal mating surface using only the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product and its mating products. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime. Always replace the protective cover when the cap is not in use.

  4. Install Insulated Cap onto Bushing

Firmly attach a hotstick to the insulated cap pulling eye. Insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push the cap home with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring it is fully mated with the locking ring seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.
