How to Install the 160DR(3) Insulated Cap

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the ELASTIMOLD 160DR(3) insulated cap, designed for insulating, shielding, and watersealing 15kV class loadbreak bushing interfaces.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Wire strippers, Screwdriver

Supplies needed:

160DR(3) Insulated Cap, Lubricant (supplied), Electrostatic grounding wire (No. 12 to No. 14 copper)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. Ensure the product is installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. If the product has a protective shipping cover, remove it and replace with the appropriate HV insulated cap or connector before submerging or energizing the circuit. Do not touch or move energized products by hand.

  2. Connect Electrostatic Grounding Wire

Connect an electrostatic grounding wire, equivalent to No. 12 to No. 14 copper, to the grounding eye of the insulated cap and twist it tight. Connect the free end of this wire to the system ground, leaving enough slack for hot-stick operation. CAUTION: Train the electrostatic grounding wire so it does not contact the bushing interface during operation. WARNING: If the ground lead disconnects during operation, do not attempt to reattach it without first pulling the insulated cap off the bushing with a hotstick.

  3. Lubricate the Insulated Cap

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap’s internal mating surface using only the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may harm the product. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime. Always replace the protective cover when the cap is not in use.

  4. Install the Insulated Cap onto the Bushing

Firmly attach a hotstick to the insulated cap's pulling eye. Insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push the cap home with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring it is fully mated with the locking ring seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.
