How to Install the 10TL Adapter for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 10TL adapter on flat metallic tape shielded cables with tape insulation shields, ensuring proper preparation and connection with Elastimold distribution products. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Knife, Soldering Iron, Wire Strippers, Rag

Supplies needed:

10TL Adapter housing, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), PVC Insulating Electrical Tape (3/4" wide), Vinyl Plastic Electrical Tape, Approved Safety Solvent, #14 AWG (2.08mm²) Wire, Grounding Lead, Electrical Insulating Tape

  1. Prepare Cable Outer Jacket

De-energize all apparatus before beginning. Refer to the Elastimold product instructions for the semiconductive shield removal dimension. Remove the cable's outer jacket to a length 2 inches (51mm) greater than this specified dimension.

  2. Remove Metallic Tape Shield

Carefully remove the metallic tape shield, ensuring it is cut back to a point 3/4 inch (19mm) from the newly cut edge of the outer jacket.

  3. Remove Semiconducting Tape Shield

Remove the semiconducting tape shield, cutting it back to a point 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the outer jacket. Ensure the insulation remains undamaged.

  4. Apply Tape Retainer and Marker

Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 turns of 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape over both the semiconducting and metallic tapes, 1/2 inch (13mm) from the outer jacket edge, to create a tape retainer. Then, wrap 2 turns of vinyl plastic electrical tape over the outer jacket, 1 inch (25mm) from its edge, to create a tape marker.

  5. Clean and Lubricate Cable and Adapter

Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the cable insulation using a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent, wiping from the cable end towards the outer jacket to remove all semiconducting residue. Lubricate the prepared cable section and the inside of the 10TL adapter with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE LUBRICANT.

  6. Install 10TL Adapter

Slide the 10TL adapter onto the cable using a forward side-to-side twisting motion. Continue until the adapter is flush with the tape marker applied in Step 4. The adapter's step will serve as a marker for subsequent Elastimold product assembly.

  7. Install Elastimold Distribution Product

Install the associated Elastimold distribution product by following its specific installation instructions. After installation, verify that the gap between the Elastimold product and the step on the 10TL adapter does not exceed 1/8 inch (3mm).

  8. Remove Tape Marker

Carefully remove the tape marker from the cable after the Elastimold product has been fully assembled.

  9. Ground the Metallic Shielding Tape

Approximately 2 inches (51mm) back from the end of the adapter, remove 1-1/2 inches (38mm) of the outer jacket. Using #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire and a grounding lead, fasten the grounding lead to the metallic shielding tape by wrapping the #14 AWG wire several times. Solder the ground lead securely to the metallic tape, taking care to avoid excessive heat that could damage the cable. After soldering, wrap the soldered area with electrical insulating tape, overlapping each cable jacket by approximately 1-1/2 inches (38mm). WARNING: UNGROUNDED SHIELDS ARE DANGEROUS.
