How to Install the 10TL Adapter for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cables
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 10TL adapter on flat metallic tape shielded cables, ensuring proper cable preparation, adapter assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Knife, Wire strippers, Rag, Soldering iron, Approved safety solvent
Supplies needed:
10TL Adapter housing, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), PVC insulating electrical tape (3/4" wide), Vinyl plastic electrical tape, ELASTIMOLD distribution product, #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire, Grounding lead, Electrical insulating tape
- De-energize Apparatus and Prepare Cable Jacket
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Remove the outer jacket a distance of 2” (51mm) more than the dimension specified for semiconductive shield removal in the ELASTIMOLD product instructions.
- Remove Metallic and Semiconducting Tapes
Remove metallic tape to a point 3/4” (19mm) from the edge of the outer jacket. Subsequently, remove semiconducting tape to a point 1” (25mm) from the edge of the outer jacket.
- Apply Retainer and Marker Tapes
Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 turns of 3/4” (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape over the semiconducting and metallic tapes, 1/2” (13mm) from the edge of the outer jacket, to serve as a tape retainer. Then, wrap 2 turns of vinyl plastic electrical tape over the outer jacket, 1” (25mm) from the edge of the outer jacket, to serve as a tape marker.
- Clean and Lubricate Cable and Adapter
Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semiconducting residue by wiping with a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. Lubricate the prepared cable and the inside of the 10TL adapter with the supplied lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE).
- Slide Adapter onto Cable
Slide the 10TL adapter onto the cable with a forward side-to-side twisting motion until it is flush with the tape marker. The step on the adapter serves as a marker for assembling ELASTIMOLD products on the cable.
- Install ELASTIMOLD Product
Install the ELASTIMOLD product by following the installation instructions supplied with that specific product. After installation, a maximum gap of 1/8” (3mm) between the ELASTIMOLD product and the step on the adapter is permissible.
- Remove Tape Marker and Prepare for Grounding
Remove the tape marker from the cable after the ELASTIMOLD product has been assembled. Approximately 2” (51mm) back from the end of the adapter, remove the outer jacket a distance of 1-1/2” (38mm).
- Ground Metallic Shielding Tape
Using #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire and a grounding lead, fasten the grounding lead to the metallic shielding tape by making several wraps with the #14 AWG wire. Solder the ground lead to the metallic tape, avoiding excessive heat to prevent cable damage. After soldering, wrap the soldered area with electrical insulating tape, overlapping each cable jacket approximately 1-1/2” (38mm). WARNING: UNGROUNDED SHIELDS ARE DANGEROUS.
