How to Install SPECTRACOOL Slim Fit Surface-Mount Air Conditioners

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation, electrical connection, and initial setup of SPECTRACOOL Slim Fit Surface-Mount Air Conditioners.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Copper conductors, Mounting gasket kit, Grub screws, Washers, Nuts, Circuit breaker or time-delay fuse

  1. Inspect and Position Air Conditioner

Inspect the air conditioner and verify its correct functionality before mounting. If the unit has been in a horizontal position, place it in an upright, vertical, or mounting position for a minimum of five minutes before operating to prevent permanent damage to the refrigeration compressor.

  2. Prepare for Electrical Connection

Refer to the unit's nameplate for proper electrical current requirements. Ensure the minimum circuit ampacity is at least 125% of the unit's amperage and within +/- 10% of the voltage shown on the nameplate. Use a higher ampere rated circuit breaker or time-delay fuse, closest to the nominal ampere rating, to protect the system. Do not connect other equipment to this circuit to prevent overloading.

  3. Connect Power Supply

Loosen the screw on the evaporator access panel and remove the power access panel. Route the copper power supply wire through the strain relief. Connect the wires to the terminal block according to the label. Reinstall the power access panel and screw, then tighten the screw on the strain relief to secure the supply wire. Ensure power supply wiring is restrained to prevent contact with the internal fan.

  4. Verify 3-Phase Operation (Optional)

For optional 3-phase operation, apply power and observe the phase monitor green light to ensure the proper phase connection order.

  5. Perform Initial Operation Test

Immediately after applying power, verify that the evaporator blower (enclosure air) starts running. Set the cooling controller set point below the ambient temperature and operate the air conditioner with the compressor running for five to ten minutes to confirm proper functionality. Condenser air temperatures should be warmer than normal room temperatures within a few minutes.

  6. Connect Optional Door Switch

If a door switch is available, remove the jumper from terminals 3 and 4 of the door switch terminal block on the back of the unit. Connect the door switch to these two terminals. The door switch only supports a floating connection, with no external voltages.

  7. Prepare Enclosure and Install Gasket

Refer to the appropriate enclosure cutout diagram (Figure 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 in the manual) for your specific unit to prepare the mounting surface. Using the mounting gasket kit provided with the unit, install the gasket to the air conditioner.

  8. Mount Air Conditioner to Enclosure

Screw the supplied grub screws into the blind nuts on the rear of the unit. Carefully mount the air conditioner to the enclosure, being cautious not to damage the mounting gasket, as it forms the seal between the air conditioner and the enclosure. Avoid dragging the air conditioner with the gasket attached to prevent rips or tears. Secure the unit using the supplied washers and nuts.

  9. Adjust Controller Set Point

The controller is factory-wired and programmed to energize when power is applied. Adjust the controller to your desired cabinet temperature. Refer to the factory default cooling differential settings (e.g., 35°C turn-on/30°C turn-off or 87°F turn-on/80°F turn-off) as a guide.
