Determine the required cable tray configuration, including straight runs, bends, and junctions. Review the specific cutting patterns provided in the full manual for your tray size and desired modifications (e.g., 90-degree bends, elbows, tees) before proceeding with any cuts.
- Cut Cable Tray Sections
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter to make precise cuts. First, cut the top side wire at an angle away from the new end, resting the jaws on the cradle wire. Repeat this process for all remaining side wires. Then, turn the tray over and cut the bottom wires from the underside, also at an angle and resting on the cradle wire. Ensure each cut is clean to minimize sharp edges and prevent corrosion.
- Form Bends or Junctions
For 90-degree bends, cut the specified side and bottom wires at the bend location according to the tray width's cutting pattern. Smoothly bend the tray until the inside edges meet. Secure the bend using Splice Kits and Splice Washers. For other modifications like elbows, tees, or width reductions, follow the specific cutting and bending instructions in the manual, utilizing appropriate Splice Kits, Splice Washers, and Splice Bars (e.g., Universal Splice Bars, T-Connection Splice Bars).
- Connect Tray Sections
Join straight or modified tray sections using Splice Kits (three-piece staked bolt, washer, and nut) and Splice Washers. Ensure all connections are secure. For added support and stability, especially on tray sides, incorporate Universal Splice Bars as needed, cutting them to fit with bolt cutters if necessary.
- Support the Cable Tray
Install cable tray supports for straight sections at 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Position supports within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections, ensuring the span between supports does not exceed the length of the tray. Add additional supports around bends and where the cable tray level changes to maintain stability and proper load distribution.
