How to Install the ABB Variable Depth Small Handle Disconnect Switch

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the ABB Variable Depth Small Handle Disconnect Switch in a Hoffman enclosure.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Mounting screws, Terminal connectors, Nylon washers, Flat washers, Lockwashers, Hex nuts

  1. Install the mounting plate

Secure the mounting plate and plate gasket on the inside of the enclosure behind the rectangular opening using four screws and four nylon washers.

  2. Assemble the handle mechanism

Attach the ABB handle mechanism to the mounting plate installed in step 1, omitting the cap screw and lockwasher for the bottom hole.

  3. Install the slide arm

Position the slide arm over the defeater part of the handle assembly with the notch facing the door opening, then secure it with a long cap screw and lockwasher.

  4. Connect the slide arm to the lock release mechanism

Attach the bottom of the slide arm to the offset arm of the lock release mechanism using two flat washers, two lockwashers, and two hex nuts, but do not tighten yet.

  5. Adjust the safety lock release mechanism

Check and adjust the factory-installed roller bracket so that the door latch hits against the latch stop when closed, and adjust the slide arm length for proper safety lock release timing.

  6. Attach the door catch

Install the door catch to the tapped spacer on the door using two screws and lockwashers to prevent the door from opening when the handle mechanism is in the 'ON' position.

  7. Drill and tap holes in the panel

Follow ABB instructions to drill and tap additional holes in the panel as needed for fuse clips.

  8. Mount the switch or circuit breaker

Install the switch or circuit breaker according to ABB instructions, ensuring to cut off the connecting rod assembly as specified.
