This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Hoffman A21SDA Operator Adapter with Square D Bulletin 9422 flexible cable operating mechanisms in various Hoffman disconnect enclosures. Always verify proper function and clearances after installation to ensure safety and compliance with all codes.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Cutting tool (e.g., hacksaw), Drill and Tap set
Supplies needed:
Hoffman A21SDA Operator Adapter Kit, Square D Bulletin 9422 operating handle, Square D cable handle mechanism, Square D locking lever extension, Square D disconnect switch or circuit breaker, Square D operating rod (if required), Fasteners for switch/breaker mounting (per Square D instructions)
- Install Mounting Plate and Gasket
Install the mounting plate (item 15) and plate gasket (item 2) on the inside of the enclosure, behind the rectangular opening. Secure them in place with four screws (item 3).
- Remove Square D Stiffener Bracket
Discard the Square D stiffener bracket which is normally installed inside the enclosure flange behind the operating handle.
- Assemble Square D Operating Handle
Assemble the Square D operating handle and cable handle mechanism to the mounting plate. Omit the cap screw and lockwasher that fit into the bottom hole of the Square D operating handle.
- Modify Slide Arm (if applicable)
If installing in an enclosure with a disconnect on the centerpost, cut 2.5 inches off the bottom end of the slide arm (item 4). The bottom end has rectangular holes only.
- Install Slide Arm and Shoulder Collar
Install the slide arm (item 4) over the projecting part of the handle assembly (on the Square D operating handle) with the notch facing the door opening. Place the smaller diameter end of the shoulder collar (item 5) through the oval slot in the slide arm.
- Secure Slide Arm Assembly
Install the long cap screw (item 6) with lockwasher (item 7) through the shoulder collar into the bottom mounting hole of the Square D operating handle and tighten. Ensure the slide arm and interlock arm move up and down smoothly.
- Install Locking Lever Extension
Install the Square D locking lever extension according to Square D instructions.
- Attach Slide Arm to Lock Release Mechanism
Attach the bottom of the slide arm (item 4) to the offset arm of the lock release mechanism using two flat washers (item 8), two lockwashers (item 9), and two hex nuts (item 10). Do not tighten these nuts until adjustments are made in a later step.
- Check Roller Bracket Adjustment
For enclosures with a disconnect on the right flange, check the adjustment of the factory-installed roller bracket. The door latch should hit against the latch stop portion of the roller bracket when the door is closed and latched. Adjust the roller bracket up or down if necessary to ensure proper operation of the release mechanism.
- Adjust Slide Arm Length
Adjust the length of the slide arm assembly. The safety lock on the Square D handle operator should release just before the master door is fully latched. Lengthen the slide arm if the safety lock releases too soon, or shorten it if it releases too late. Once adjusted, tighten the nuts from Step 8.
- Attach Door Catch
Attach the Hoffman door catch (item 11) to the tapped spacer on the door using the bottom set of mounting holes, two screws (item 12), and lockwashers (item 13). The door catch prevents the door from opening when the switch is in the “ON” position. Bend the door catch up or down as needed to properly hook onto the locking lever extension of the Square D handle operator.
- Drill and Tap Panel Holes
Drill and tap holes in the panel as shown in the diagrams and tables provided in the Square D instructions. Refer to Square D instructions for locating fuse clip holes.
- Mount Switch or Circuit Breaker
Mount the switch or circuit breaker using Square D instructions and parts.
