Overview

The Panduit SCSF4-L copper butt splice features a long-barrel, flared design engineered for reliable splicing of #4 AWG stranded copper conductors in industrial and locomotive applications. Its flared openings ensure easy insertion of flexible and extra-flexible cables, including locomotive, welding, and mining cables, reducing installation time and minimizing conductor damage. The splice is constructed from tin-plated copper to inhibit corrosion and includes internal wire stops to prevent over-insertion, ensuring consistent electrical performance. UL Listed and CSA Certified to 35 kV with a temperature rating of 90°C when crimped using Panduit Uni-Die™ tools or specified competitor dies, it meets rigorous safety and performance standards. Color-coded barrels are marked with Panduit and competitor die index numbers for proper crimp tool selection, simplifying installation and reducing errors. Tested by Telcordia to meet NEBS Level 3 standards and approved by the American Bureau of Shipping, the SCSF4-L delivers consistent electrical performance and mechanical strength in demanding environments. Ideal for high-durability applications requiring secure, long-term connections, it supports a wide range of industrial, rail, and heavy-duty cable splicing needs.

How to Install the Copper Compression Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing copper compression connectors, ensuring a secure and reliable electrical connection.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Heat gun or propane torch

Supplies needed:

Copper compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing, Wire

  1. Prepare the wire

Strip the wire insulation to the length specified in the tool chart, ensuring not to nick or damage the conductor strands.

  2. Insert the wire

Insert the stripped wire into the copper compression connector until it reaches the stop. Ensure a snug fit.

  3. Crimp the connector

Using the appropriate crimping tool, crimp the connector according to the specified number of crimps indicated on the tool chart, starting from the tongue end and moving towards the wire end.

  4. Inspect the crimp

Check the crimped connection for sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove any imperfections to ensure a safe connection.

  5. Apply heat shrink tubing

Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for at least 1-1/2 inch overlap on the wire insulation. Slide it over the crimped connector.

  6. Shrink the tubing

Use a heat gun or propane torch to evenly shrink the tubing, moving from the crimped portion of the connector towards the insulated wire until the adhesive flows at the ends, indicating completion.
