How to Install and Configure a Panduit G5 PDU

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Panduit G5 Metered, Switched, and Metered & Switched Power Distribution Units (PDUs) into a datacenter rack, including mounting, grounding, power connection, and initial configuration.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Mounting hardware, Ground bonding cable, Tie wraps, Cage nuts

  1. Review Safety Information and Prepare

Before beginning, ensure you are qualified personnel knowledgeable about AC power products. Read all safety information, including warnings about high leakage current and lethal voltages. Ensure the installation environment is temperature and humidity controlled, free of contaminants, and within 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F) ambient temperature. Verify the PDU is intended for Information Technology Equipment (ITE) loads with linear/PFC input current.

  2. Mount the PDU in the Rack

Install the PDU into the datacenter rack using the provided mounting hardware. For vertical PDUs, align and install mounting buttons into the PDU's screw holes (either opposite outlets for center-facing, or on the sides for back/front-facing), then insert the buttons into the keyhole slots on the rack's PDU mounting bracket. For 1U/2U PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location, then screw the mounting bracket ears into the RETMA rail surface. Ensure the PDU is securely attached.

  3. Ground the PDU

Connect a ground bonding cable from the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or to the rack's grounding strip/bus bar. Ensure the bonding conductor meets the minimum AWG requirements (e.g., 12 AWG for up to 32A) and use the appropriate screw size (e.g., 5mm for over 16A to 40A).

  4. Attach the Input Cord to Universal Input PDUs (if applicable)

For Universal Input PDUs, ensure the facility side connector is disconnected. Open the input cord connector latches on the PDU, insert the input cord plug, and then close the latches to securely lock the input cord into the connector. Ensure the uPDU interconnect is fully secured to the mating PDU side connector. This step must be performed by a skilled person with the facility side connector disconnected.

  5. Connect the PDU to a Power Source

WARNING: Ensure the feed circuit breaker is OFF before connecting power. Verify all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to ON. Connect the PDU's input power cord to a grounded (earthed) electrical outlet on an appropriately rated, dedicated branch circuit, protected by a circuit breaker matching the PDU input plug type. Refer to the PDU label for input ratings. Once connected, turn the feed circuit breaker ON. The OLED screen will display a status bar during boot-up, then the Main Menu.

  6. Configure Universal Input PDU Input Type (if applicable)

For Universal Input PDUs, connect to the PDU's Web interface (refer to the User Manual for access instructions). Navigate to the 'System Management' page under settings, then select 'Set Input Cord' under actions. Choose the correct cord type from the pull-down menu based on your installed input cord part number. Select 'Save' to apply the changes; the PDU will reset.

  7. Secure Connected Power Cords (Optional)

To prevent accidental disconnects, utilize the integrated cord retention feature on most C13 and C19 outlets. Plug in the power cord, then use the provided tie wraps to slide an end into the notch next to the outlet and wrap it around the cord, securing it firmly. Alternatively, use optional locking power cords on compatible outlets.
