How to Install and Configure Panduit G6 Power Distribution Units (PDUs)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Panduit G6 Metered, Switched, and Metered & Switched Power Distribution Units (PDUs) into a datacenter rack, including mounting, wiring, and initial configuration.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver, USB Drive

Supplies needed:

Ground bonding cable

  1. Review Safety Information and Prepare for Installation

Before beginning, thoroughly read the 'Important Safety Information' section in the Panduit G6 PDU Installation Manual. Ensure the PDU is only used with Information Technology Equipment (ITE) loads with linear/Power Factor Corrected (PFC) input current. Verify that the installation will be performed by individuals knowledgeable about AC power products and associated hazards. Ensure a reliable grounded connection is available before connecting to AC power. Do not overload the PDU; the total input current of connected equipment must not exceed the PDU's output rating. Install the PDU in a temperature and humidity controlled, indoor environment (0°C to 60°C, 90% max noncondensing humidity).

  2. Mount the Vertical PDU in the Rack

Determine the desired PDU orientation: outlets facing the center of the rack, or outlets facing the back or front of the rack. If outlets face the center, align and install the mounting buttons with the screw holes on the face opposite the outlets. If outlets face the back or front, align and install the mounting buttons with the screw holes on the sides of the PDU. Once buttons are installed, insert the mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the PDU mounting bracket in the rack to secure the PDU. For Universal Input PDUs, ensure proper spacing between top and bottom PDU brackets and move both brackets up until the top bracket reaches its maximum height before installing the PDU.

  3. Attach the Input Cord to Universal Input PDUs (if applicable)

If installing a Universal Input PDU, open the input cord connector latches on the PDU. Carefully insert the facility-side input cord plug into the connector. Close the input cord connector latches on the PDU to securely lock the input cord into place. Note that when installing Universal Input PDUs with the input cord at the top, the top three RUs might be obstructed at the back by the input cord plug.

  4. Ground the PDU

Locate the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis (on the outlet surface for most PDUs, or on the circuit breaker surface for dual-sided models). Connect a ground bonding cable from this point to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or to the rack's grounding strip or bus bar. Use the provided external earthing screw with a star washer for supplementary Earth bonding to the rack metalwork. Ensure bonding conductors meet minimum requirements: 12 AWG for up to 32A, 8 AWG for up to 63A, and 6 AWG for up to 80A.

  5. Connect the PDU to a Power Source

Turn the feed circuit breaker for the branch circuit OFF. Verify that all circuit breakers on the PDU itself are set to the ON position. Connect each PDU to an appropriately rated branch circuit, ensuring the PDU power cord has sufficient length to reach the power source. Refer to the label on the PDU for its specific input ratings. Once connected, turn the feed circuit breaker ON. The PDU's OLED screen (if present) will display a status bar during startup, then the Main Menu. Switched and Monitored & Switched PDUs will show a light corresponding to each outlet as it powers up.

  6. Configure Universal Input PDU Input Type (Web Interface)

For Universal Input PDUs, configure the input cord type via the Web interface. First, reference the User Manual for instructions on how to connect to the Web interface. Once connected, navigate to the 'System Management' page under 'Settings'. Select 'Set Input Cord' under 'Actions'. From the 'Cord Type' pull-down menu, select the correct cord type based on your facility-side plug and region (refer to the table in the manual). Select 'Save' and allow the PDU to reset. Incorrect selection may lead to inaccurate metering and power rating display.

  7. Configure Dual Rated PDUs (CLI, if applicable)

If you are installing a dual-rated PDU, an additional Command Line Interface (CLI) configuration step is required to enable the Web interface to report the correct power capacity. Refer to the 'CLI Commands' section in the User Manual for detailed instructions on performing this configuration.

  8. Secure Output Power Cords (Optional but Recommended)

For connected IT equipment, utilize the integrated cord retention feature on most IEC C13 and C19 outlets. Plug in the power cord for the IT device. Using the tie wraps provided with the PDU, slide one end of the tie wrap into the notch on the PDU next to the desired outlet and wrap it around the power cord. Secure the tie wrap firmly to prevent accidental disconnects. Alternatively, use optional locking power cords on C13, C19, and combination outlets for enhanced security.
