How to Install and Configure a Panduit G5 PDU

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the physical installation, grounding, power connection, and initial configuration of a Panduit G5 Power Distribution Unit (PDU) in a datacenter rack. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Mounting hardware (e.g., buttons, screws), Cable ties, Ground bonding cable

  1. Review Safety Information

Before beginning installation, thoroughly read and understand all important safety information and regulatory compliance notices provided in the manual. Ensure that installation is performed by qualified personnel knowledgeable about AC power products. WARNING: High leakage current. Ensure a reliable grounded connection before connecting power distribution products to AC power. DANGER: This PDU contains LETHAL VOLTAGES. No user-serviceable parts inside.

  2. Install PDU Mounting Hardware

For vertical PDUs, align and install the mounting buttons with the screw holes on the PDU's face (opposite outlets) for center-facing installation, or on the sides for back/front-facing installation. For 1U/2U PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location in the rack if not already present, and attach mounting ears to the PDU if necessary, rotating them 180 degrees if alternative mounting is required.

  3. Mount the PDU in the Rack

Secure the PDU to the rack. For vertical PDUs, insert the installed mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the PDU mounting bracket in the rack. For 1U/2U PDUs, screw the mounting bracket ears into the RETMA rail surface at the U location where the cage nuts were installed. Ensure the PDU is firmly attached and level.

  4. Ground the PDU

Connect a ground bonding cable from the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or to the rack's grounding strip/bus bar. Use a bonding conductor of appropriate gauge (e.g., 12 AWG for up to 32A, 8 AWG for up to 63A) and secure it with the provided external earthing screw and star washer.

  5. Attach Input Cord to Universal Input Connector (Universal Input PDUs only)

If installing a Universal Input PDU, ensure the facility side connector is disconnected. Open the input cord connector latches on the PDU, insert the input cord plug, and then close the latches to lock the input cord securely into the connector. This step must be performed by a 'skilled person' as defined in IEC 62368-1 standard.

  6. Connect PDU to a Power Source

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, ensure all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power. Connect the PDU's input power cord to a grounded electrical outlet providing branch circuit overcurrent protection of appropriate current rating. Verify that connected devices are capable of operating from the same line voltage supplying the PDU. Turn the feed circuit breaker ON. The PDU's OLED screen will display a status bar during loading, then the Main Menu.

  7. Configure Universal Input PDU Input Type (if applicable)

For Universal Input PDUs, connect to the PDU's Web interface (refer to the User Manual for instructions). Navigate to the System Management page under settings, select 'Set Input Cord' under actions, and choose the correct cord type from the pull-down menu based on your cord's part number. Select 'Save' and the PDU will reset. Incorrect selection may lead to inaccurate metering.
