How to Install and Configure a Panduit G5 PDU

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the physical installation, grounding, power connection, and initial configuration of Panduit G5 Power Distribution Units (PDUs) in a datacenter rack. It covers mounting, connecting the input cord, and configuring universal input PDU settings.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Tie wraps, Ground bonding cable, Cage nuts (for 1U/2U mounting)

  1. Review Safety Information and Prepare

Before beginning installation, carefully read all safety information in the PDU manual. Ensure all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power. Verify that the PDU and connected devices are compatible with the line voltage. This PDU contains lethal voltages; installation and service must be performed by knowledgeable individuals. For permanently connected PDUs, a licensed electrician must perform the installation.

  2. Mount the PDU in the Rack

Determine the appropriate mounting method for your PDU form factor (vertical, 1U, or 2U). For vertical PDUs, align and install mounting buttons on the PDU, then insert them into the keyhole slots on the rack's PDU mounting bracket. For 1U or 2U PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U locations, then screw the PDU's mounting bracket ears into the RETMA rail surface.

  3. Ground the PDU

Locate the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis. Connect a ground bonding cable from this point to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or to the rack's grounding strip/bus bar. Ensure the connection is secure to establish a reliable protective earth ground.

  4. Attach the Universal Input Cord (if applicable)

If using a Universal Input PDU, open the input cord connector latches on the PDU. Insert the facility-side input cord plug into the connector, then close the latches to securely lock the input cord in place. Ensure the connector is fully secured to the mating PDU side connector.

  5. Connect the PDU to a Power Source

Ensure the feed circuit breaker for the dedicated branch circuit is OFF. Verify that all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to ON. Connect the PDU's input power cord to an appropriately rated, grounded (earthed) electrical outlet. Refer to the PDU label for input ratings. Once connected, turn the feed circuit breaker ON. The OLED screen (if present) will display a status bar during startup.

  6. Secure Connected Power Cords (Optional)

For C13 and C19 outlets with integrated cord retention, plug in the power cord. Using the provided tie wraps, slide one end into the notch next to the outlet, wrap it around the cord, and secure the tie wrap to prevent accidental disconnects. Alternatively, use optional locking power cords.

  7. Configure Universal Input PDU Input Type via Web Interface (if applicable)

If you have a Universal Input PDU, connect to its Web interface (refer to the User Manual for connection instructions). Navigate to the 'System Management' page under settings. Select 'Set Input Cord' under actions, choose the correct cord type from the dropdown menu, and click 'Save'. The PDU will reset after saving the configuration. Incorrect selection may lead to inaccurate metering.
