Supplies needed:
Copper compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing
- Select the correct connector
Choose a connector that matches the wire size and material. Ensure you do not use a copper connector on aluminum wire.
- Prepare the wire
Strip the wire insulation to the length specified in the tool chart. Avoid nicking or damaging the conductor strands.
- Insert the wire into the connector
Insert the stripped wire into the connector until it reaches the stop. Ensure a secure fit.
- Crimp the connector
Using the crimping tool, select the appropriate die based on the tool chart. Crimp the connector starting near the tongue and work towards the wire entry, evenly spacing the crimps.
- Inspect the crimped connector
Check for sharp edges, flash, or burrs on the connector and remove any if present.
- Prepare heat shrink tubing
Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for at least 1.5 inches of overlap on the wire insulation.
- Apply heat shrink tubing
Position the heat shrink tubing over the crimped connector and shrink it using a heat gun or propane torch, moving from the crimped portion towards the insulated wire until adhesive flow indicates completion.
