How to Install Copper Compression Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for properly installing copper compression connectors, ensuring secure and reliable electrical connections.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Heat gun or propane torch

Supplies needed:

Copper compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose a connector that matches the wire size and material. Ensure not to use copper connectors on aluminum wire.

  2. Prepare the wire

Strip the wire insulation to the length specified in the tool chart without nicking the conductor strands. Clean the wire to ensure a good connection.

  3. Insert and crimp the connector

Insert the stripped wire into the connector until it stops. Use the crimping tool to crimp the connector according to the specified number of compressions in the tool chart, starting near the tongue end.

  4. Inspect the crimp

After crimping, inspect the connection for sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove any if present to ensure safety.

  5. Apply heat shrink insulation

Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for at least 1-1/2 inches of overlap on the wire insulation. Shrink the tubing using a heat gun or propane torch, moving from the crimped portion toward the insulated wire until adhesive flow indicates completion.
