Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Heat gun or propane torch, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
Copper compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing, Wire
- Prepare the wire
Strip the wire insulation to the approximate length indicated on the tool chart. Ensure not to nick or ring the conductor strands.
- Insert wire into connector
Clean the wire and insert the stripped end into the copper compression connector until it stops.
- Crimp the connector
Using the appropriate crimping tool, insert the connector into the die and crimp between the color bands or knurl markings, ensuring the required number of compressions is achieved.
- Inspect the crimp
After crimping, inspect the connector for any sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove them if present.
- Apply heat shrink insulation
Cut the heat shrink tubing to length, allowing for a minimum of 1-1/2 inch overlap on the wire insulation. Shrink the tubing using a heat gun or propane torch, moving from the crimped portion toward the insulated wire until adhesive flow at the ends indicates shrinkage is complete.
