Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Heat gun or propane torch
Supplies needed:
Aluminum compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing, Belleville spring washers, Anti-oxidation compound
- Prepare the wire
Strip the wire insulation to the length specified in the tool chart, ensuring not to nick or ring the conductor strands. Wire brush the stripped wire to remove any oxide film.
- Insert wire into connector
Insert the stripped wire into the aluminum compression connector until it stops. Ensure that the connector is marked for the appropriate wire size and material.
- Crimp the connector
Using the appropriate crimping tool, crimp the connector evenly in the designated crimp zone. Follow the tool chart for the required number of crimps and ensure they are spaced evenly.
- Inspect the crimp
After crimping, inspect the connection for sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove any that are present to ensure a safe connection.
- Apply heat shrink tubing
Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for a minimum of 1-1/2 inch overlap on the wire insulation. Shrink the tubing using a heat gun or propane torch, moving from the crimped portion toward the insulated wire.
- Secure the connection
For a secure bolt connection, use Belleville spring washers and coat unplated mounting surfaces with anti-oxidation compound. Tighten the bolt to the recommended torque requirement.
