Overview

The Panduit LAA1-38-X is a single-hole, long-barrel aluminum lug designed for reliable electrical terminations in industrial and power distribution applications. Constructed from high-strength extruded aluminum alloy, this lug accommodates #1 AWG stranded copper or aluminum conductors with a 3/8" (9.5mm) stud hole for secure mounting. The long barrel design maximizes conductor surface area contact, reducing electrical resistance and ensuring stable, low-resistance connections. Tin-plated to inhibit corrosion, the LAA1-38-X is UL Listed and CSA Certified for use up to 600V with a 90°C temperature rating. Its durable construction and precise manufacturing minimize loose connections, enhancing system reliability in harsh environments. Ideal for power distribution panels, industrial machinery, and electrical wiring systems where long-term performance and corrosion resistance are critical. Compatible with standard crimping tools and Panduit’s color-coded die index system for proper crimp die selection.

How to Install Aluminum Compression Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for properly installing aluminum compression connectors, ensuring secure and reliable electrical connections.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Heat gun or propane torch, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing, Belleville spring washers, Anti-oxidation compound, Mounting bolts

  1. Prepare the wire

Strip the wire insulation to the appropriate length as indicated on the tool chart. Ensure not to nick or damage the conductor strands.

  2. Clean the wire

Use a wire brush to remove any oxide film from the stripped wire to ensure a good electrical connection.

  3. Insert the wire into the connector

Insert the stripped wire into the aluminum compression connector until it reaches the stop. Ensure a snug fit.

  4. Crimp the connector

Using the specified crimping tool, place the connector in the die and apply even pressure to crimp the connector according to the tool chart specifications.

  5. Inspect the crimp

After crimping, inspect the connection for sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove any imperfections.

  6. Apply heat shrink insulation

Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, ensuring at least 1.5 inches of overlap on the wire insulation. Shrink the tubing using a heat gun or propane torch, moving from the crimped area towards the insulated wire.

  7. Secure the connection

If applicable, use Belleville spring washers and anti-oxidation compound on the mounting surfaces. Tighten the bolt to the recommended torque requirement to ensure a secure connection.
