How to Install and Prepare Fiber Optic Cable

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the installation and preparation of fiber optic cable, including sheath removal, core preparation, and fiber preparation.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Sheath Knife, Approved Cable Cutters, Needle Nose Pliers, Buffer Tube Removal Tool, Primary Coating Stripping Tool, Tape Measure, Scissors/Snips

Supplies needed:

Clean Cotton Cloths, Water Absorbent Tape, Flame Barrier Tape, Binder Strings

  1. Remove the cable sheath

Mark a length of six feet (2 meters) from the end of the cable on the outer sheath. Use a sheath knife to ring the circumference of the sheath at this mark and gently flex the cable to separate the sheath. Discard the removed sheath section.

  2. Prepare the cable core

Once the outer sheath is removed, cut the ripcord and unwrap the binder strings around the buffer tubes. Remove any water absorbent tape and cut the central strength member to the required length for the closure being used.

  3. Prepare the buffer tubes

Check the blade setting on the buffer tube removal tool. Measure the length of the tube to be removed, mark it, and ring the tube in 1-2 ft sections. Remove the sections until the desired amount of fiber is available. Wipe any excess thixotropic gel from the exposed fiber with a clean cloth.

  4. Access the optical fibers

Using scissors, cut the fibers to the appropriate length, generally at the midpoint of the exposed fibers. Use the primary coating stripping tool to remove the 250 μm diameter coating from the fiber, followed by a wipe with an alcohol-dampened cloth to remove any debris.
