How to Install the Panduit Fusion-Splice Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Panduit Fusion-Splice Connectors using compatible splice machines.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Fiber cleaver, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Fusion splice connectors, Splice protection sleeves, Lint-free wipes, Fiber cleaning solution

  1. Prepare the splice machine

Follow the initiation steps specific to your splice machine, including powering up, performing arc tests, and ensuring proper cleaning and maintenance.

  2. Strip the fiber

Strip approximately 35mm of buffer and acrylate off of the fiber using a fiber stripper.

  3. Clean the fiber

Clean the bare fiber with lint-free wipes and fiber cleaning solution, ensuring to follow safety precautions when handling bare optical fiber.

  4. Cleave the fiber

Cleave the bare fiber to a length of 10mm using a fiber cleaver. Ensure all acrylate coating has been removed for a clean cleave.

  5. Insert the fiber into the splice machine

Place the cleaved fiber into the left-side fiber holder of the splice machine according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  6. Prepare the connector assembly

Open the connector assembly blister pack from right to left, ensuring to grab the handling stick rather than the fiber stub end.

  7. Position the connector in the holder

Place the connector assembly into the disposable plastic holder with the fiber stub protruding to the left and the handling stick to the right.

  8. Close the holder

Close the holder on the right side of the splice area, ensuring the field fiber and stub fiber are approximately 1mm apart.

  9. Start the splice process

Close the wind cover of the splice stage. Depending on the machine, the splice process may begin automatically or require pressing a start button.

  10. Complete the splice

After the splice is completed, wait for the machine to provide an estimated insertion loss value and perform a brief tension test.

  11. Install the splice protection sleeve

Gently slide the splice protection sleeve up to the rear of the fiber holder and open both holders.

  12. Secure the splice

Grasp the fiber with your left hand and raise it slightly to slide the splice protection sleeve flush against the metal part of the connector subassembly.

  13. Heat the splice

Place the splice point in the heater of the splice machine, ensuring the splice protection sleeve is centered in the heating area.

  14. Follow heating instructions

Close the heater cover and follow the on-screen instructions for the heating and cooling process specific to your splice machine.

  15. Assemble the connector

Once the heating/cooling cycle is complete, remove the assembly from the heating area and snap the front housing together with the rear housing.

  16. Final assembly for SC connectors

For SC connectors, install the outer housing, ensuring the red alignment dot on the top of the connector assembly faces up.

  17. Remove the handling stick

Grasp the dust cap to hold it in place and either cut off the handling stick or gently twist to remove it.
