How to Install and Prepare Fiber Optic Cable
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the installation and preparation of fiber optic cables, including sheath removal, core preparation, and fiber access.

Eye and Hand Protection, Approved Cable Cutters, Needle Nose Pliers, Scissors/Snips, Sheath Knife, Buffer Tube Removal Tool, Primary Coating Stripping Tool, Tape Measure
Supplies needed:
Clean Cotton Cloths, Water Absorbent Tape, Flame Barrier Tape, Binder Strings
- Remove the cable sheath
Mark a length of six feet (2 meters) from the end of the cable on the outer sheath. Use a sheath knife to ring the circumference of the sheath at this mark and gently flex the cable to separate the sheath. Discard the removed sheath section.
- Prepare the cable core
Cut the ripcord and unwrap the outer strength members. Remove any water absorbent tapes or yarns and discard them. Separate the color-coded buffer tubes from the central strength member and cut the central strength member to the proper length for the closure being used.
- Access the optical fibers
Determine how many fibers to access and mark the buffer tubes accordingly. Use a buffer tube slitting tool to carefully cut the buffer tube without touching the fibers. Peel away the slit section and cut at both ends to remove the remaining tube, exposing the optical fibers.
- Strip the optical fibers
Using a primary coating stripping tool, remove the 250 μm diameter coating from the exposed fibers. Wipe the fibers with an alcohol-dampened cloth to remove any residual debris.
