Overview

The Panduit FOGPX06Y is a 6-fiber, OM3, indoor/outdoor armored central tube cable designed for robust data transmission in demanding environments. This cable features a plenum (OFCP) rated jacket, making it suitable for installation in air-handling spaces where fire safety is paramount. The 250µm fibers ensure reliable performance for high-speed data applications. Its armored construction provides superior crush protection and defense against rodent attacks, eliminating the need for separate conduit or innerduct in many installations. This significantly reduces material and labor costs, offering potential savings of up to 25%. The versatile indoor/outdoor design allows for a single cable solution, removing the need for transitions between different cable types, which further saves on costs and preserves optical loss budgets. Dry water blocking technology utilizing super absorbent polymers ensures protection against moisture ingress without the mess of traditional gels, meeting the stringent water blocking requirements of gel-filled cables. Manufactured in the USA, this cable is ideal for interbuilding backbone, data center, and horizontal installations, providing a higher concentration of cables in an area compared to traditional conduit systems. How to Prepare Fiber Optic Indoor/Outdoor Stranded Loose Tube Cable

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for removing the sheath, preparing the cable core, and accessing the fibers in stranded loose tube optical cables.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Eye and Hand Protection, Approved Cable Cutters, Needle Nose Pliers, Scissors/Snips, Sheath Knife, Buffer Tube Removal Tool, Primary Coating Stripping Tool, Tape Measure

Supplies needed:

Clean Cotton Cloths, Buffer Tube Slitter, Water Absorbent Tape, Flame Barrier Tape

  1. Remove the cable sheath

Mark a length of six feet (2 meters) from the end of the cable on the outer sheath. Use a sheath knife to ring the circumference of the sheath at this mark and gently flex the cable to separate the sheath. Discard the removed sheath section.

  2. Prepare the cable core

Once the outer sheath is removed, cut the ripcord and unwrap the outer strength members. Remove any water absorbent tapes and binder strings from around the buffer tubes. Separate the color-coded buffer tubes from the central strength member.

  3. Access the fibers

Determine how many fibers to access and mark the buffer tubes accordingly. Use a buffer tube slitting tool to carefully cut the buffer tube in between the marked lengths. Peel away the slit section and remove the fibers, ensuring to wipe any excess thixotropic gel from the exposed fibers.
