How to Install the LC Fiber Optic Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and terminating LC fiber optic connectors using both 900μm tight-buffered fiber and 1.6mm - 2.0mm jacketed cables.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Fiber Cable Jacket Stripper, Alcohol Bottle, Fiber Buffer Stripper, LC Crimp Tool, Carbide Scribe, Safety Glasses, LC Polishing Puck, Primer, Anaerobic Adhesive, Heat Shrink Curing Tool, Tweezers, Screwdriver, Microscope

Supplies needed:

5μm Polishing Film, 1μm Diamond Polishing Film, 85 Durometer Polishing Pad, Distilled Water, Dust Caps, Crimp Sleeves, 900μm Boots, Jacketed Boots, Heat Shrink Tubing

  1. Prepare Adhesive and Primer

Remove the plunger from a syringe, squeeze about 0.5ml of FJPXY Anaerobic Adhesive into the back of the syringe barrel, insert the plunger, and attach the needle.

  2. Strip the Fiber

Use the fiber buffer stripper to strip the buffer from the fiber, ensuring to remove no more than 1/4" (6.4mm) at a time to avoid breaking the fiber.

  3. Attach Ferrule to Fiber

Clean the bare fiber with an alcohol-soaked lint-free wipe, apply primer to the fiber and buffer, then insert the fiber into the ferrule assembly and apply adhesive.

  4. Cleave the Fiber

Using a carbide scribe, make a small score mark across the bare fiber just above the endface of the ferrule, then pull the fiber away and discard the stub.

  5. Polish the Fiber

Rub the cleaved fiber stub against a piece of 5μm Aluminum Oxide polishing film in a circular motion until even with the ferrule end.

  6. Assemble Connector and Boot

Push the boot onto the grooved area of the backbone of the ferrule assembly until it is against the flange.

  7. Cure Heat Shrink Tubing

Turn on the heat shrink curing tool, hold the connector in the hot air stream for 20-30 seconds, then remove it and turn off the tool.

  8. Attach Duplex Clip

Insert the connector into one side of the duplex clip, ensuring the latch is on top, and repeat for the other connector.
