How to Install a Panduit EL2P PDU
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for qualified personnel to safely install and connect a Panduit EL2P Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) into a datacenter rack or cabinet.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, T20 Torx screwdriver, 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench
Supplies needed:
Mounting hardware (screws, brackets), Cage nuts (for horizontal PDU mounting), Ground bonding cable
- Review Safety Information and Prepare for Installation
Before beginning, ensure you are qualified personnel. Review all safety precautions, especially regarding high leakage current and lethal voltages. Verify that devices connected to the PDU are compatible with the line voltage. Ensure all circuit breakers are in the OFF position before connecting input power. Install the PDU in a temperature and humidity controlled, indoor environment, free of conductive contaminants. Do not operate near water or excessive humidity.
- Mount the PDU in the Rack
Mount the PDU into the datacenter rack or cabinet. For vertical PDUs, insert the mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the PDU mounting bracket in the rack, then secure using a #2 Phillips screwdriver to 3.0Nm. For horizontal PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location on both front and rear equipment rails, then screw the mounting bracket ears into the RETMA rail surface. Use only the hardware provided for installation. Maintain a minimum clearance of 2 to 3 inches between the PDU chassis and cabinet frame for proper airflow.
- Ground the PDU
Connect the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis to the rack metalwork or a known earthed reference terminal in the building. Use a ground bonding cable with a conductor size that meets National or Local Electrical Codes (e.g., 14 AWG for up to 15A, 12 AWG for up to 20A). This supplementary Earth bonding is critical for safety.
- Optional: Rotate the Network Controller
If a specific orientation for the physical ports is desired, use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the two retaining screws from the network controller. Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable to prevent damage. Rotate the controller to the preferred orientation, then carefully reconnect the ribbon cable, ensuring no crimping or pinching. Re-secure the controller with the two screws, torquing them to 2.2–3.1 lbf-in [0.25–0.35 N-M] to avoid metal deformation.
- Connect the PDU to a Power Source
Ensure the feed circuit breaker for the power source is in the OFF position. Verify that all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to ON. Connect the PDU's input power cord to a grounded electrical outlet that is located near the equipment and is easily accessible. The outlet must be an appropriately rated branch circuit, protected by a branch circuit overcurrent protection, and adhere to all local and national electrical codes. Do not overload the PDU.
- Power On and Verify Operation
Turn the feed circuit breaker for the power source to the ON position. Allow sufficient time for the PDU's operating system to load. Once complete, the Main Menu should display on the PDU's screen, indicating successful power-up. Switched (MS) and Monitored & Switched per Outlet (MSPO) PDUs will feature an LED corresponding to each outlet as it is powered on.
