Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on compatible copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp with the approved tool and die set for a secure connection.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or die set, NSI M-250 crimp tool (for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI M-500 crimp tool (for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 crimp tool
Supplies needed:
Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Compatible concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductor
- Select the correct connector
Choose a lug or splice connector that matches the cable size and conductor type. Verify that the connector series and barrel size are appropriate for the installation before starting.
- Prepare the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor can be fully inserted into the connector barrel and completely fill it.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion, because contamination can reduce connection quality.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm that the conductor is fully seated and that no bare strands are left exposed outside the barrel.
- Crimp the connector
Use an approved NSI compression tool and the correct die set for the connector series and wire size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated. Use the NSI M-250 for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable or the NSI M-500 for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable when applicable.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Make sure the conductor remains fully seated and that the crimp locations match the manufacturer’s markings. Follow all electrical safety practices and de-energize circuits before installation.
