Molded Junction Box, Length 4 Inch x Width 4 Inch x Depth 2 Inch, Material Polycarbonate, Color GrayHow to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors
Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and proper crimping using approved tools and dies.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or press, Approved dies for the selected connector series, NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool (optional), NSI N1240 tool (optional), NSI M-250 crimp tool (for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI M-500 crimp tool (for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable)
Supplies needed:
Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor, Wire color/size matched to the connector chart
- Select the correct connector
Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the conductor size and series you are installing. Verify that the connector matches the cable size, wire color, and application before starting.
- Strip the conductor correctly
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it. Wear appropriate PPE and keep the conductor de-energized before handling.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the stripped copper is clean and ready for insertion.
- Insert the conductor into the connector
Insert the cleaned conductor fully into the connector barrel until it is completely seated. Confirm that the conductor fills the barrel and is positioned according to the barrel markings or manufacturer’s suggested crimp locations.
- Crimp the connector with approved tools
Crimp the connector using an approved UL-listed tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for crimp locations. For long-barrel lugs and splices, make twice as many crimps as indicated in the parenthesis. Use NSI N12ID or N1240 if applicable, or the specified mechanical crimp tool for the cable size.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the conductor is fully seated, the crimp locations are correct, and the connector is secure. Verify the installation against the connector chart and tool requirements before placing the circuit into service.
