How to Install and Crimp NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices by selecting the correct connector size, preparing the conductor, and crimping it with the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip-length and crimp-location guidance to ensure a secure electrical connection.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Compatible approved dies or mechanical crimp tool (as applicable)

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression lug or splice connector sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable, Optional approved mechanical crimp tool set (NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 for large M2, Approved dies listed for the selected tool and connector series

  1. Select the correct connector and tool

Choose a lug or splice that matches the cable size and connector series before starting. Verify that the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors, and confirm that your crimp tool and dies are listed for the connector size. Use the NSI M-250 for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable or the NSI M-500 for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable when required.

  2. Strip the conductor to the proper length

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the connector barrel and completely fill it. Safety warning: damaged strands can weaken the connection and create overheating risk.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the exposed conductor is clean and ready for insertion before crimping.

  4. Insert the conductor fully into the barrel

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Confirm that the stripped portion fills the barrel and that no bare conductor is left exposed beyond the intended insertion depth.

  5. Crimp the connector at the marked locations

Crimp the connector using the approved tool and the die set specified for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for the manufacturer’s suggested crimp locations, and apply the number of crimps shown for the connector type. Safety warning: use only certified UL-approved tools and dies to avoid an unsafe connection.

  6. Apply the required number of crimps for long-barrel connectors

If you are using a long-barrel lug or splice, apply twice as many crimps as indicated for the corresponding short-barrel connector. Verify that each crimp is fully formed and located according to the barrel markings.

  7. Inspect the finished connection

Check that the conductor is fully seated, the barrel is properly crimped, and the connection is secure. Confirm that the connector size, tool, and die selection match the cable size and series before energizing the circuit.
