How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp using the approved tool and die set.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI M-250, NSI M-500, NSI N12ID, or NSI N1240), Approved dies for the selected connector and conductor size

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression lug or splice connector sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose a lug or splice connector that matches the conductor size and application. Verify that the connector series and barrel type are approved for the cable being installed before starting.

  2. Prepare the conductor

Carefully strip the insulation to the required length without nicking the strands. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and make sure the cleaned conductor can fully insert into the connector barrel.

  3. Insert the conductor fully

Push the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel so the conductor fills the barrel. Confirm that the conductor is clean, fully seated, and properly aligned before crimping.

  4. Crimp with the approved tool

Use the correct approved crimp tool and die set for the connector size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps shown in the table.

  5. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connection to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Ensure the connector is fully compressed on the conductor and that no strands are loose or damaged.
