This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Flood-Seal YY-Type Disconnect Kits, including cable preparation, connector assembly, and final housing integration.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum cables), Screwdriver
Supplies needed:
Silicone grease (HOMAC CST 3095 or equivalent), HM53 inhibitor or equivalent (for aluminum cables), Midget Type Fuse 1 1/2 x 13/32 (if required, not included)
- Prepare Load End Housing and Cable
Select the correct cut-off ring on the Load End housing for your cable size and cut off the end of the housing at the arrow tip. Wipe the cable clean, bevel the insulation on larger cables, and apply silicone grease to the cable end and housing opening. Insert the cable 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing.
- Connect Load End Wires
Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the cable ends, ensuring not to overstrip. Insert the fuse or connecting link into the YY Load Side assembly. Insert the stripped wires into the connector of the Load End insert and tighten the screws securely. Apply silicone grease and push the insert until it is properly seated in the twin cap housing, pulling on wires as needed.
- Prepare Line End Housing and Cable
Select the correct cut-off ring for the cable being used on the Line End housing. Cut and bevel the cable insulation. Apply silicone grease to the end of the cable and to the cut opening of the housing. Slide the cable through until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Bare the insulation to fit the compression lug.
- Crimp Lugs and Assemble Line End Insert
Crimp the lugs onto the bare cable ends using a proper crimping tool, ensuring the tongue portions of the lugs are back to back. For aluminum cables only, wire brush the pads of the lugs and apply HM53 inhibitor or equivalent, then wipe off excess. Assemble the insert with the lugs, nut, bolt, and Belleville washers, then tighten the bolted assembly securely.
- Integrate Line End Insert into Housing
Lubricate the Y-Type housing with silicone grease. Slide the housing up to the bottom of the insert. Push the insert into the opening of the housing. While holding the Y-Type housing, pull on the cables and slide the housing toward the insert. Push the insert until it is fully seated in the housing.
- Complete Final Assembly and Verify
Plug the Load End assembly, with the installed connecting link (or fuse), into the Line End insert. After completing the assembly, verify that no bare metal extends beyond the insulating cover. WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable codes and safety rules.
