Overview

The ABB XJG68-EMT 2-inch conduit expansion coupling is a purpose-built solution for managing thermal expansion and contraction in electrical metallic tubing (EMT) conduit systems. Designed specifically for 2-inch EMT conduit, this coupling accommodates up to 8 inches of axial movement, preventing stress, misalignment, and potential damage to the conduit during temperature fluctuations. The internal bonding jumper eliminates the need for external grounding straps, maintaining electrical continuity across expansion joints while simplifying installation. Constructed from malleable or ductile iron with exterior and interior zinc plating, the coupling provides corrosion resistance and raintight performance after installation. The internal sliding bushing (keyed) ensures proper alignment and movement, while the gland nut secures the fitting without disassembly. Installation is fast and straightforward—slide the coupling onto the conduit until it stops at the internal sliding bushing, tighten the gland nut, and the job is complete. This design exceeds code requirements for long conduit runs, making it ideal for facilities experiencing significant temperature variations, seismic activity, or long conduit runs where conduit integrity is critical. The internal bonding jumper, constructed of tinned copper braid, meets UL fault current test requirements and complies with NEC Article 250.98 bonding requirements, ensuring continuous grounding without additional components.

Yes, it is designed for both indoor and outdoor applications.

How to Install the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint

This guide provides instructions for installing the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint, designed to couple two sections of Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) and accommodate longitudinal movement caused by thermal expansion and contraction.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Pipe wrench

Supplies needed:

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

  1. Insert EMT Tubing

Insert one section of Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) into each end of the pre-assembled XJG-EMT Expansion Joint. The factory-partially tightened gland nut allows for easy insertion without prior disassembly of the unit.

  2. Tighten Gland Nuts

Using a pipe wrench, tighten the gland nut at each end of the EMT connector. Refer to the Torque Chart for the correct torque values: 90.4 N•m (800 lbl-in) for 3/4” & Smaller; 113 N•m (1000 lbl-in) for 1”, 1-1/4”, & 1-1/2”; 181 N•m (1600 lbl-in) for 2” & Larger. This action compresses the Teflon packing, providing a rain-tight seal.

  3. Position Internal Bushing

Position the internal bushing in the middle of the expansion joint fitting. This allows for equal movement in both directions (2 or 4 inches from the center in either direction, resulting in a total movement of 4 or 8 inches) to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction.
