This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing XD Expansion/Deflection couplings to protect conduit wiring systems from movement, especially when one or both conduits cannot be turned.

Pipe wrench, Wrench, Ohmmeter
Supplies needed:
Electrically conductive compound
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Check
Ensure all NEC and local codes are followed by a qualified installer. Never perform installation on an energized line. If installing in wet locations, apply a thin coat of electrically conductive compound (e.g., Kopr-Shield®) on the first three internal NPT threads of the coupling to enhance conductivity and protect mating surfaces. Do not twist the unit during installation to avoid damaging the grounding strap.
- Tighten the Union Nut
Wrench-tighten the Union Nut (A) on the XD Coupling Assembly.
- Connect Stationary Coupling End to Conduit #1
Thread the NPT Stationary Coupling End (E) onto Conduit (#1). Finish tightening with a pipe wrench until wrench-tight. Do not use the Union Coupling End (F) for tightening, as this could damage the grounding strip.
- Connect Union Coupling End to Conduit #2
While holding the Union Coupling End (F) firmly (with Union Nut (A) wrench-tight), thread Conduit (#2) into the NPT Union Coupling (B). Finish tightening with a pipe wrench until wrench-tight.
- Verify Ground Continuity
Before energizing the line, verify that ground continuity has been established using an Ohmmeter or other suitable testing equipment. Failure to properly ground the connection will create an electrical shock hazard which can cause serious injury or death.
