Overview

The ABB XD012-TB is a 5-inch cast iron expansion and deflection coupling designed for robust conduit system management. Manufactured by ABB - Installation Products, this coupling (SKU: XD012-TB) provides essential flexibility and strain relief in electrical installations. Its cast iron construction ensures durability and resistance to environmental factors, while the electro zinc plating offers corrosion protection, extending the service life of the coupling and the connected conduit. This coupling is engineered to accommodate axial expansion and contraction, as well as lateral deflection, preventing stress on conduit runs caused by thermal changes or structural movement. This is critical in applications where conduit systems are subjected to vibration or temperature fluctuations, such as industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and infrastructure projects. The 5-inch size is suitable for standard conduit diameters, facilitating straightforward installation. The UNSPSC code 39131707 categorizes this product within the conduit fittings and accessories segment. By absorbing movement, the XD012-TB helps maintain the integrity of the electrical pathway, safeguarding connections and preventing premature failure of the conduit system. Its design focuses on reliable mechanical performance in real-world operational conditions.

How to Install the XD Expansion/Deflection Coupling

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the XD Expansion/Deflection coupling, designed to protect conduit wiring systems from movement. Always ensure installation is performed on a de-energized line and avoid twisting the unit to prevent damage to the grounding strap.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Pipe wrench, Wrench, Ohmmeter

Supplies needed:

Electrically conductive compound (e.g., Kopr-Shield®)

  1. Apply Conductive Compound (Wet Locations)

If installing the coupling in a wet location, apply a thin coat of an electrically conductive compound, such as Kopr-Shield®, on the first three internal NPT threads of the coupling. This step enhances conductivity and protects the mating surfaces from corrosion.

  2. Secure the Union Nut

Wrench-tighten the Union Nut (A) as depicted in Figure 2 of the documentation. Ensure this nut is securely fastened before proceeding with the connection of the conduits.

  3. Connect the First Conduit

Thread the NPT Stationary Coupling End (E) onto Conduit (#1). Finish tightening this connection with a pipe wrench until it is wrench-tight. Important: DO NOT use the Union Coupling End (F) for tightening, as this action could damage the internal grounding strip.

  4. Connect the Second Conduit

With the Union Nut (A) already wrench-tight, firmly hold the Union Coupling End (F). Then, thread Conduit (#2) into the NPT Union Coupling (B). Finish tightening this connection with a pipe wrench until it is wrench-tight, referring to Figure 2 for visual guidance.

  5. Perform Ground Continuity Test

Before energizing the electrical line, use an Ohmmeter or other suitable testing equipment to verify that ground continuity has been properly established. Failure to ensure proper grounding will create an electrical shock hazard, which can cause serious injury or death. Always adhere to all NEC and local electrical codes during and after installation.
