How to Install XD Expansion/Deflection Couplings
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing XD Expansion/Deflection couplings where both conduits can be turned, protecting conduit wiring systems from movement and ensuring proper electrical continuity and grounding.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Pipe wrench, Wrench, Ohmmeter or suitable testing equipment
Supplies needed:
Electrically conductive compound (Kopr-Shield®) (for wet locations)
- Observe Safety Precautions and Prepare for Installation
Ensure the line is de-energized before beginning installation to prevent electrical shock. Follow all NEC and local codes. For wet locations, apply a thin coat of electrically conductive compound (Kopr-Shield®) to the first three internal NPT threads of the coupling to enhance conductivity and protect mating surfaces. Avoid twisting the unit during installation to prevent damage to the grounding strap.
- Attach Stationary Coupling End to Conduit #1
Thread the NPT Stationary Coupling End (E) onto Conduit (#1) and hand-tighten. Use a pipe wrench to finish tightening until wrench-tight. Do not tighten using the Union Coupling End (F) to avoid damaging the grounding strip.
- Disassemble the Integral Union
Loosen and remove the Union Nut (A) to disassemble the integral (2) Piece Union from the XD Coupling Assembly (D).
- Slide Union Nut onto Conduit #2
Slide the removed Union Nut (A) over Conduit (#2).
- Attach NPT Union Coupling to Conduit #2
Thread the NPT Union Coupling (B) onto Conduit (#2) and hand-tighten. Finish tightening with a pipe wrench until wrench-tight.
- Connect Conduit #2 Sub-assembly to Coupling End
Insert the Conduit (#2) sub-assembly (with NPT Union Coupling (B)) into the Union Coupling End (F). Ensure Gasket (C) is properly placed between them to maintain a rain-tight seal.
- Secure the Union Nut
Slide the Union Nut (A) back over and thread it into the Union Coupling End (F) until it completely seats on the NPT Union Coupling (B). Finish tightening the Union Nut (A) with a wrench until wrench-tight.
- Verify Ground Continuity
Before energizing the line, verify that ground continuity has been established using an Ohmmeter or other suitable testing equipment. Failure to properly ground the connection creates an electrical shock hazard that can cause serious injury or death.
