Overview

The ABB TBM58PCTS-LI is a 14.4V lithium-ion battery-powered hydraulic cutting tool designed for field and workshop applications requiring precise, portable cutting of conductive and non-ferrous materials. This tool delivers cordless operation with a 14.6 lb weight (including battery) and compact dimensions of 17.5 x 2.5 x 13 inches, enabling one-handed use in tight spaces. It cuts copper, aluminum, and ASCR conductors up to 1.5 inches in outer diameter, making it suitable for utility, construction, and industrial installations where hard-drawn conductors must be terminated or spliced. The tool also handles rebar and ground rods up to 5/8 inch diameter, as well as wire rope up to 3/4 inch, eliminating the need for multiple cutting devices on site. Powered by a lithium-ion battery (sold separately), it provides consistent cutting force without exhaust emissions or noise nuisance, ideal for indoor or confined environments. The TBM58PCTS-LI features a rotating head for maximum flexibility, a two-stage rapid advance ram for reduced cycles, and overload bypass protection that disengages if the material exceeds capacity. The tool kit includes the cutting tool, two battery cartridges, a battery charger, operation instructions, and a carrying case. Applications include substation maintenance, telecommunications splicing, structural reinforcement cutting, and rigging operations where clean, burr-free cuts are required. The battery-powered design reduces downtime associated with cord management and fuel supply, improving job site efficiency.

How to Install and Operate the TBM58PCTS-LI Battery Charger

Guide for setting up and using the TBM58PCTS-LI battery charger to charge compatible battery packs.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Qualified electrician (if outlet needs modification)

Supplies needed:

TBM58PCTS-LI Battery Charger, AC Power Cord, Thomas & Betts 144-BAT-LI battery pack

  1. Prepare the Power Outlet

Ensure you have a properly grounded three-prong outlet. If only a two-prong outlet is available, use a temporary adapter with a grounding pin, but have a qualified electrician install a proper outlet as soon as possible. WARNING: Ensure the outlet box is grounded before using an adapter. If unsure, have it checked by a qualified electrician.

  2. Connect the Power Cord

Connect the AC power cord to the TBM58PCTS-LI battery charger and plug it into the prepared AC outlet. The indicator lamp should blink red, indicating stand-by mode. WARNING: Never alter an AC cord or its plug. An improper connection can cause electric shock. The charger must be grounded.

  3. Prepare the Battery

Ensure the battery pack is at room temperature (68°F -77°F or 20°C - 25°C). CAUTION: Do not charge a battery that has been stored below 32°F (0°C). Allow it to warm up to room temperature before charging.

  4. Insert the Battery

Insert the Thomas & Betts 144-BAT-LI battery pack into the TBM58PCTS-LI charger. The charging system will begin, and the indicator lamp should turn solid green.

  5. Monitor Charging Status

Observe the indicator lamp for charging status: SOLID GREEN (charging), RAPID BLINKING GREEN (80% complete), SOLID ORANGE (100% complete). If the lamp lights red, the battery temperature is too high or low; remove and allow it to reach room temperature. If the lamp blinks red rapidly, the battery is defective and must be replaced.

  6. Verify Completion

Once the indicator lamp turns solid orange, the battery is fully charged. A charged battery can be stored in the charger indefinitely.
